Of course they say that the reason your football is known as soccer in the USA is back in the late 19th century when it was introduced from Great Britain it was known as "Associated Football" to differentiate it from American-style football. Since "associated" is abbreviated "assoc.", the name picked up an extra syllable and dropped the "a", and thus "soccer" was born. It was very popular for a time when it was introduced, but rugby gradually took over from which the modern game of American grew out of. Or so the story goes. I suppose Americans needed a sport that could inflict maximum injury upon its players paid for in the currency of broken bones, snapped tendons and ligaments, and a plethora of neurological and brain injuries. (Brains, hair and eyeballs all over, and veins between your teeth!)

This is why I preferred to play safer sports in my younger days, such as hockey and fencing.
