There are a couple of methods depending on the program:
- In Photoshop, create a new layer just above the line layer, and group it (Ctrl+G) with that. When you apply colour to the new layer, only the non-transparent contents of the grouped layer below will be affected, so colour won't go outside the lines.
- In SAI and Photoshop, you can lock the transparency of the line layer, and recolour it with a brush.
Layer grouping is also possible in SAI, but it's called 'layer clip' instead, and is activated via a checkbox. Works exactly the same way, though. It's also possible to stack multiple grouped layers in either program.
