So far, this is my favorite out of the entire ongoing project, both for artistic and nostalgic reasons. For the nostalgia, there was a time King Ghidorah was my favorite, and it was the Trendmasters figures that introduced me to him (I actually got the Power-up Mecha-King Ghidorah first). I was in a phase where dragons were the best damn things ever (obviously, DRAGONHEART was my absolute favorite movie), and there was nothing better than a dragon with three heads. Not double - TRIPLE the destruction! RAWR!
At the time, I had not seen any of his movies (or any Godzilla movie, for that matter), so for quite a while, I would pronounce his name "gai-dora". It wasn't until I saw his debut film that I dropped that pronunciation in favor of the REAL pronunciation, "gee-druh". ;p
*deep breath*
ANYWHO.
I may have looked to the toy itself for reference of the design, but I looked to the back of the Godzilla Wars packaging for the coloring. The lighting they put on him shows him off with sharp contrasts of his shades and highlights, making him look extremely shiny. When shading and highlighting, I began to realize just how much I was capturing the very character I was drawing (and in many ways, aiming for) - the glint of his scales conveys a quite admirable, majestic...dare I say, KINGLY appearance; the darker areas, a malevolent purpose and intent.
And the latter pretty much filters into the black version.
Though Ghidorah himself never got a repaint, his mechanized counterpart did. I feel this keeps some consistency.
*Note - this is the last one I improvise on the alternate color scheme. From here on out, there are actual figures with alternate colors for reference.
