I secure the base to the bottom of the box with wire like you would twisty ties for a toy. Then that box is put inside another box, surrounded by cushioning. That being said, there's no truly safe way to ship something like this ^^; there's always the risk.

Knock on wood, I've had pretty good luck with it so far. Very minor damage (a limb popping off cleanly, just need to dab a little glue and stick it back on lol)
