I love the books! I read them quite a while ago, though, and pity that the movie didn't reach its full potential.

Yep, it's a pity the movie doesn't cover more of the intention of the books. But I thing the story and background is much too complex for 2-hour movie, all the feelings and imagination I had during reading the story can never be created by a movie the same way.
I'm also afraid that the rest of the story will never make it into a movie.

I also wish for a cuddly pine marten plushie myself, but I haven't found any yet.

Yes, I agree, the movie did not stand up to the standards of the trilogy. I just wish that Philip Pullman would have taken a bigger role in the making and editing of the film.
