Yes but over the years of use an SSD will break down before an optical drive will.
Plus its a Hybrid so It will boot up almost as fast as an SSD

And Hybrid is cheaper with more space

There are plenty of forums to look at and get all the information you need.
Make sure all of your hardware is compatable.

If at all possible, find a working system from one of the forum posts.

I've been browsing tonymac for a month now, and I think I'm pretty set on the hardware, just gunna go through a recommended parts and maybe try to use an nvidia 970 with custom drivers, but I'm more worried about the software side. I dont know anything about bioses or dsdts or whatever. I was all set until I heard that sound and iMessages didn't work out of the box, and I dont know if I understand enough to fix it.

You can search just about any issue that comes up and there's a help post for it. I've learned a lot just from building my own. Bios' are fairly easy. Nvidia works out of the box. I didn't use any dsdt.. There are work arounds for sound and iMessage isn't worth working to make it work.
