Seeing as how Shivan is a mercenary who no doubt has seen, witnessed, and experienced the dark side of this world in her line of profession, this makes perfect sense to beat the happy cheeriness out of Charlotte, other wise she will not handle what waits for her after training.
Reminds me of "Sands of Iwo Jima". John Wayne has just bashed one of the new recruits with a rifle butt because he was doing an exercise wrong. The recruit wound up with a huge bandage over his cheek, and the other recruits are complaining about their sergeant(Wayne)'s treatment of him, and one of them says "He'll probably get a citation for teaching us to be good careful marines."
