Musically Inclined (FA:United 2008 Art Trade)
Way back in the early days of FA:United, I did an art trade with
farellemoon I don't recall the specifics of the setting beyond being set in one of the hotel ballrooms (thus set at the con) and having her either listening to music, or showing off a video on a video Ipod. What I do recall about that afternoon, is that it's one of
rocksteady's first demonstrations of the infamous "Walls of China", or at least the first one at which I was present.
The original pencils for this trade were photographed in Farellemoon's sketchbook, but as with most hotel ballrooms, the lighting was not very good, and thus the contrast was rather poor. Since this was a single-character shot with minimal backdrop, I elected to fix the photo issue by vector-inking the pencils with Inkscape. As a side benefit, I was able to make a number of modifications, among them fixing the position of her right arm so her elbow was properly tucked behind her, reducing the size of her right hand on the table, and fixing a slight asymmetry in her eyes.
The biggest fix was upon looking up and reviewing Farellemoon's model sheet I discovered I had fallen short one tuft of cheek fur on each side of her head (there are five specified, I only drew four). Fixing this with vectors was fairly easy even though I had actually traced the outline of the pencils instead of simply tracing them directly with bent vectors. Duplicating a suitable curly fluff on each side, I fit it in after pushing/rotating the others around to make room. After this, I noticed the spec for floppy ears that I also failed to include, so I added those too.
I didn't try to ink the crude Chun-Li figure I penciled in the video iPod's screen, but later came up with the idea to superimpose the much better version of her I drew for Walls of China. Hooray for retaining the assets that go into my artwork, for I had a version of her that I made independent of the backdrop to insert, by making a mask of the iPod screen, superimposing the resulting object over the other image, turning the object back into a mask, and importing it back into this image. (That last bit of babble is so I remember how to do it next time :D )
