I worked through your old colouring tutorial, btw - interesting, thanks. I found myself using different shading layers for skin tones vs everything else. Greys worked really well on everything else, but seemed to make skin tones too muddy.
Technical question: what resolution do you do your original work at? As a traditional illustrator, I always worked to the principle of doing the original about 30% larger than the finished size. I don't know if the same principle works with digital art. I do my pencil sketches on an A3 bank pad, then scan them for inking and colouring. I've just started giving digital illustration another go, with Manga Studio, which I really, really like, so far: but I did the original at 1024x768/72dpi, but wasn't really happy with the final result. I reduced it by 30%, but thought it was still a bit iffy.
I think I need to work larger, at higher res, perhaps?

Indeedly :) 'Dots Per Inch'. 300 is standard for printing, so 350 will deliver good quality res for printing.
I work as a graphic and web designer with a printing company, btw, which is partly why I'm so curious about technical details :)
Thanks very much for the info, though - it's obvious I've been working at too low-res, no wonder I've been so underwhelmed by the outcome to date. It's funny, I've worked with digital graphic design for 20 years, but never got into digital illustration. Trying to fix that now, so another learning curve to get around!
