This is the future of the world where Bertram lives. This is a world the animals have created for themselves without really understanding what it was, nor did they wish to do so. They're interest in what lied outside the wall of cables that supported them would wane in fluctuations, so another dream of the collective species lay dead where their feet were planted. The closest anyone ever got to exploring the terrain their cities rested upon was an expedition to a nearby hilltop. That was their Apollo 11. What the creatures that lived in these now barren and faceless buildings strived for where smaller goals that fulfilled their sense of entitlement and importance, and such a world was that of which these creatures felt they had to claw their way to the top in order to be happy and fulfilled. Businesses and politicians and governments would push each other out of the way and tear each other to shreds just so that they can bask in the light of a sun that would never shine through the wastes of their industry and success. The animals had built a world where they saw everyone else as less-important in order to chase a dream where they could reach a state of being that was without pain or loss or hardship or misery or unnecessary obligations to uphold or even the fear of being forgotten. Everyone thought they could be immortalized for all of time, or achieve a feeling of happiness that was absent from their lives, or even do what little they can to make the world a less horrid place. But it was all for naught, as the world had decided to move on and evolve without them.
And now we're left with this one lone animal of an unspecified variety. It continues to crawl through the streets lined with buildings that have shut everyone off from the necessities of life they were so accustomed to and towards the endless wall of cables, driven by the vain and improbable hopes that it can find a way to peak its head out and gaze upon the sun that no one could ever see.

The reason it's called the Nailtop Society is because the structure they all live in looks like a giant nail standing upright when viewed from the outside. It's all part of a larger story I'm conceptualizing.
As you can tell, I need to work on my shading. Maybe I'll put it in scraps later if I can draw a better version of it.
