In medieval times, potatoes were considered "food of the Devil" because they grew beneath the earth and the "people" were unfamiliar with them when they were introduced. The royalty wanted the people to grow potatoes because if an enemy invaded, they would trample wheat crops and other above ground crops so everyone would go hungry. If you trample potatoes, you just make more potatoes. There were announcements from the castles about the King having had potatoes for his meals, trying to induce the people to try them. I am the receptacle of weird facts because of my avocation in antiques.
