What exactly is the purpose for these con badges? I've seen many of these across FA and DA and i never understood their purpose. Can you enlighten me MuscleWolf?

Every Con gives you an "Official" Con badge. It's the one that the con personnel check to make sure you are YOU. However, furs also like to make their own Con Badge, which is a lot freer in showing everyone who their fur is. Some furs have several badges that they "add onto" every year, and they wear ALL of the, like a military man who sports his medal of honor, or like Boy/Girl scouts show off their merit badges. Usually the NAME on the home-made badge is BIG so someone can spot you far away in the hall. It's like those, "Hello, I'M _________ " badges that you wear at a gathering where people aren't familiar with everyone.

So... you can make your own, but the con presonnel have to check it to make sure it's you?

No, hun. Your OWN con badge is not the official one. If you take your official one off, they get really upset.

Yes, most people "pin" the Official con badge to their shirt, and the have their "specially made for me" conbadge on a lanyard or a cord around their neck. Anyway, the "specilly made for me" conbadges are more treasured than the official one, which usually get tossed after the Con. Din has his conbadges that others have made for him: AQB52, Mitternacht, Firestorm 6. He hangs them up on the mirror's edge. The Special conbadges can be very expensive, too.
