Germany is a country with a rich history since being unified from numerous states in 1871 to create the German Empire. After losing the First World War, the German empire was replaced by the Weimar Republic and was forced to surrender some of it's territory (mostly to Poland) in the Treaty of Versailles.
The rise of the Nazis in the 1930s led to the Holocaust and the Second World War, after which Germany was defeated and divided by Allied occupation; the communist East Germany and the federal republic West Germany. The country was reunified in 1990 following the collapse of communism and the Soviet Union.
Today Germany is the wealthiest country in Europe and plays an active role in the European Union. The national football team has also won the FIFA World Cup three times in their history. The largest furry convention outside of the United States is EuroFurence, which for most of it's history has been based in Germany.
EDIT: Make that FOUR times winning the World Cup! Herzlichen Glückwunsch an euch!

Germany is not the typical tourist country. Sure, there are metropolises like Berlin or Hamburg, but the history of Germany makes it hard to recommend a city or a state.
Actually, visitors should start in the Ruhr area, (for example in Essen with the Zeche Zollverein and the Krupp headquarters) go to Hamburg (largest European logistics center) and also to Stuttgart.
Bavaria only if it is absolutely necessary. I know it's "typically German", but in Germany people say: "I wanted to go on holiday in other countries, in Bavaria".

Awesome map as always Keeny.
Though I hate to break it to you but the USSR didn't officially and fully dissolve until 1991, but yes by 1990 many countries begin to lose interest in communism and though a few of the former Soviet republics declared independence, it wasn't official until 1991. If anything Germany helped to end communism by making the first anti-communist move by tearing down the Berlin Wall and re-unifying a year later, much to the chagrin of our PM at the time; Margaret Thatcher, who feared a re-unification would effect the European economy amongst other crap she spouted out, well they sure showed her up!

'The country was reunified in 1990 following the collapse of communism and the Soviet Union'.
With a quote like that people would think that the USSR split up earlier, hence why I mentioned it. Well if anything that proved that Thatcher's bitching and moaning about a re-unification came to naught. :D

Pretty awesome, but minus 7,000 cool points for missing off the petrolhead mecca that is das Nürburgring
Hey, I think Germany is awesome. We can't hold ourselves accountable for what our ancestors did to each other in WW2.
My great-grandfather (a church minister in Belgium during WW2) actually got on quite amicably with the occupying German forces - while he was successfully hiding Jewish families who lived in his village. He earned a medal for that after the war ended!

Well, it's remind me about something:

Germany is famous, so don't want to be rude.
What I always find particularly exciting is what the foreign countries (especially the Americans) associate with Germany. Or also the Indians or the Chinese. While the people of Germany themselves are not always willing to acknowledge their achievements.
But that's probably also one reason why Germany (despite all the hype about Google and Facebook) is the world market leader in so many important and essential things. The Germans themselves never think their performance is good enough. That's why Germany is the technological leader.
Germany is not building the next search engine, but is supplying the robot technology for the Google car and built Apple's headquarters. No kidding.
