Really heavy gauge armature wire, they're made to be strong but bendable so it works perfectly. You might have to search around to a place that carries the thick stuff (at least 1/2") and it usually costs about $12 for enough for one tail if you buy it locally at art stores. I've found the stuff online to be hit or miss quality-wise though.
Unfortunately I buy mine locally at an art store. It's specifically for making armatures for sculptures so you'd have the most luck at a store meant for that. Anything over 1/4" is usually fine though. Wire never really works as well as people expect no matter what gauge, so I find the 4 gauge here http://www.dickblick.com/products/b.....culpture-wire/ works just as well for most tails as the 1/2" that I buy sometimes, with the added advantage that it's less than half of the price.
