YATTA ZO! A watercolor pic that DOESN'T suck! I finally got how to do it! Victory is MINE! Rawr!
I've been playing around with various elements of head designs for dragons. Crocodilian style, Monster hunter wyvern styles, and so on. One of the coolest things I've found were crocodile eyes. It's weird but they strike me as emotive. There's just so much in them! Maybe I've been looking at scaled creatures for too long.
Monster hunter wyverns are so darn cool. The way the lines move on the head is beautiful. I've been flipping through the two artbooks that have been translated and published and it's amazing. There's really a sense of "fit" to each monster. Their features just mesh well and organically which is very satisfying to understand because it's all so simple.
I think this took me several hours to make. It's a 6" x 6" bit of bristol board! It's soo teeny but it takes soo much to get it to look right and everything. All's I'm saying is, so much effort for SUCH a good result.

Well, aren't you one for minutia? It is keratin. Keratin is actually found in small amounts on the surface of our skin, our hair and so on. It's nature's structural reinforcement agent for vertebrates. It's also the reason why our skin while pliable can withstand so much abuse before breaking. Keratin isn't hair though, It's just a fiber shaped protein that weaves together to form that hard layer we need to not bleed out from abrasive forces like our thighs moving past each other as we walk. Although, yes, keratin is like the primary component of hair.
But yeah, It's effectively the same stuff as rhino horns which are made composed of more than just keratin.
