Sadly, I did not make it to AC this year. Or last year. Or the year before that. But I did go way back in 2011, and that's when I got this beauty. And since I never told this story to anyone besides a few in person who have seen this amazing flag, I figure now would be the perfect time to relate the tale to all of you.
Back in 2011, Anthrocon decided to show some appreciation to the city of Pittsburgh, the city that hosts the world's largest furry convention, by making an official Anthrocon flag featuring the city's colors, yellow and black. Well actually, not just one flag. They made four flags. Three of the flags would stay with Anthrocon - two would fly above the David L. Lawrence Convention Center during AC weekend, and one would fly on the flagpole in front of the Westin at the same time. Maybe you've seen them this past weekend? The fourth was donated to the Charity Auction, and would be going home with the lucky fur with the highest bid.
And that lucky fur turned out to be me. I'd rather not disclose how much I spent on this four of a kind item (one of a kind, really, in that the other three are in storage somewhere in Pennsylvania for about 360 days a year). Suffice it to say, I have never payed more for anything at a furry convention than this flag. Yes, that includes hotel bills. But that's okay - the money went to a very good cause.
This picture was taken the Fall after AC 2011, shortly after hanging it on my dorm room wall. It currently resides in my bedroom, on the wall; along either side of it are framed prints of furry art that I got at my first fur con, MFF 2007. The other framed artwork I have in my room is also furry art that I won at Charity Auctions at fur cons, but this flag is by far the most unique, and the one piece of furry memorabilia I cherish the most. Every time I see it, it reminds me of the fun times I had in Pittsburgh back in 2011. I'm not sure if I will ever be going to another Anthrocon, but if not, that's okay - I was lucky enough to have been able to take this piece of Anthrocon history back home with me.
