your AoH is one of the main reasons i started writing. i wish i could draw my characters but i have no talent for 2d art (haven't tried 3d yet)

talent isn't everything. most of it comes down to hard work and dedication
and no rush, i'll be around for a while =)

it doesn't matter how hard i work everything looks flat even with shading and highlights, everything that should look far away instead looks small
in truth, i understand polygons better than pencils

i can think of a few reasons why that is. =)

the most common mistake with the making things flat is lack of form. people tend to think it's just black to white in a gradient. what i do is have a medium value (lets say grey) and then use only one dark for shadows and one for highlights. no in betweens until MUUUUUUUUCh later. it's just making shadow and highlight marks where you know the light is and isn't.

the things looking smaller rather than farther probably has to do with perspective (i know cause i still struggle with it from time to time) find a ground plane, set the figure on it, and the farther back it is, the less we will see detail in it and the lighter it will be in contrast to the rest of the piece. the farther back something is, the more it blends with the background.

i know this but all art looks flat to me even yours, no offense
the only time things don't look flat is when i use my 3ds and that gives me a headache
