That is was just a matter of time. Remember in Back to the Future 2 where they mocked the idea that anyone could be nostalgic? Personally, I can see an especially strong wave of nostalgia happening for the last decade before 9/11, Gulf War 2 and any number of things. The thing I'm not looking forward to is bad 90's webpage design and KPT fractal clown barf becoming essential pieces of retro cool.
Kai's Power Tools clown barf! Those painfully distorted kittens with the hyper-stretched eyes! Technicolor * F * L * A * S * H * I * N * G* text! ell owe ell! For me, nostalgia would indicate the '80s, but that was not a particularly good time for me.
You sound as though you've at least seen, and perhaps taken to heart, Vin Flanders' https://www.webpagesthatsuck.com. I once sent an internal client a link to his site that explained exactly why her excellent idea would float like a brown trout in a public pool. She was not impressed, but her boss (whom I'd CCed) about split a gusset.

Oh, I know it well. Don't be surprised if the trendies of the latter half of the Teens, point you to just that site and say, "This is what I want, right here!"
Even as we speak, someone is probably hard at work trying to figure out how to put flashing, spinning icons on real life objects. Fractals will be what leopard print was to the 80s
