There was a $1/gallon sale at Petco lol. Moved waffle from a bin cage to this 40g. Much more straight floor space.

oh, if you hamster if chewing I read that making more room for them and giving them a lot more space to burrow and play with things is a great way to make them not want to do so anymore. Most hamsters start chewing on bars because they are anxious which usually stems from not having enough space or toys. I've seem some people get rid of the front panel on their aquariums and replace it with mesh, and cut a hole to connect a bunch of tunnels and subspaces (small cages like those plastic ones they sell, in between tunnels) together so they have more room to burrow, like a bunch of underground tunnels, it's pretty cool to see
I don't really feel comfortable putting him in plastic as he has a history of chewing through it.
He seems to be doing well in the 40g so far and it's an adequate size for a Syrian hamster, so we'll see how it goes. If he needs more space I might try to see what I can do about building a topper that I feel comfortable he won't hurt himself with.

I mean that wire grid I use in there is 14 x 14 if that helps.

Have you ever had issues with yours chewing on the suction cups? We keep our hamsters in tanks and I've been trying to think up solutions for hanging things or adding levels. I had considered suction cups, but wasn't sure if they'd chew them too much (or if it would be harmful if they did).
No worries! We get sticky backed velcro, attach one side to the tank and the other to the bottle, and presto! The actual velcro is removable with a lot of picking. The bottle tends to stay on the wall very well if you use enough velcro (don't skimp with a short strip).
The WORST chewers will still chew, but they are going to do what they do no matter what we use and it hasn't been worse with the velcro (and possibly even a bit better since it's harder for them to get to it since it's behind the bottle -- but they are industrious lol).

For my water bottles, I get those metal holders that have the flat metal strip on the back, turn it around so it's facing up, and then bend over the side of the tank! Occasionally our syrian will climb it and get on top, but we have lids for the tank with locks so he can't escape, lol.
I will keep the velcro in mind for hanging hammocks or other things though! I never would have thought to try that.
