The first of the Night Sky pinups for this month, this was commissioned by
and features his character Chastity in the swirly armor, for those who were wondering what I meant by that. ;)
I'm starting to consider the idea of skipping the scan process altogether and just taking nice photos, since they always seem to turn out much truer to the actual colors of the piece. I've posted the scan and photo here side by side so you guys can see the difference - scan is on the left, photo is on the right.
I am still open for pinups for this month, though all of the Night Sky slots have been filled. Details will be posted shortly in a new submission, please stick around if you're interested in getting one for yourself. :3
I have a Tumblr page! :D ---> http://luthiennightwolf.tumblr.com/
I will no longer be running the Facebook page so please follow my Tumblr if you'd like to continue seeing sketches, uncolored inks, and other art-related stuff. :3

haha, no doubt, but I would recommend getting a Epson Perfection, Epson specialized in scanners primarily, and I think they might have an Al-in-one, and they tend to be a little more pricey, but it is well worth it, because their scanning quality it significant, When I do my next piece, I will do a side by side and send it your way.
Also, I was reading art tip blogs on tumblr, and Epson Perfections are the #1 recommended scanners for professional traditional artists.

I second this, actually. I upgraded from my old all-in-one to the Epson Perfection V600 I have now, and saw a HUGE improvement in scan quality. It's pretty good at picking up subtle shading, which is important when you're working in traditional media. Husband got ours on sale for about $100 I think. The thing's chunky as hell, but it does an awesome job.
I have the V500, and I use bristol and Stonehenge paper, and it pics up on all the little texture details in the paper itself. I shit you not.

I usually just use the Levels tool in GIMP to adjust the color, and the magic wand to select the background so I can use the eraser to get rid of smudges or dark spots on white paper. Of course, that doesn't work if you're using tinted paper and you want to keep the tint, but you can still use the Levels tool to adjust things.
Honestly, I just play with the sliders until things look right. Usually if I up the blue level, it gets rid of the yellowing pieces seem to pick up from scanning. Sometimes the green and red need adjusting, too, but the main one I use is the value slider. Ignore the leftmost arrow, and move the middle one a little to the right, then adjust the rightmost arrow in just enough to brighten the white. Anything leftover after that, I clean up by careful selecting and erasing.
This is the first picture of Chas in I think 15 years, and I think you showed her perfectly. ^_^ Thank you so much for doing this!
Regarding scan and photo... It's an interesting choice. The photo shows it with more natural lighting, and I thihnk is truer to your work; it comes out warmer and more saturated as well. The scan shows all the colors very starkly, but it's not as warm, it's kind of sterile, and it's blank white light which we aren't likely to see the piece in. Photos would probably be best! ^_^
