Five-year-old Ahti had been overjoyed when he'd been handed his birthday present that year; it wasn't a toy or a book or anything of the sort. It was a glass bowl, with a single golden little fish inside. The boy's eyes shone brightly as he took the bowl and hurried to his bedroom, setting it on his desk as he sat in his chair to stare at it excitedly. The little fish swam around her bowl before turning to look up at her new caregiver. "Ima call you Goldy!" He cheered, reaching a finger down into the water and promptly having it nibbled by the little fish. It was love at first sight.
Ahti's parents smiled, but they knew it would be short-lived; no child ever understood the responsibility of owning a pet, and certainly not at the age of five. They figured they'd be flushing that poor fish before the month was out.
But they figured wrong.
Sixteen years later, Ahti smiles as he sits down on a rock at the edge of his massive pond; it was a central fixture in the reserve, everybody came to feed the fish and watch them swim about in all their swirling colours. But when Ahti sat down, one fish in particular bee-lined for him, swimming up close.
Ahti reached out his hand and stroked it along the fish's side with an affectionate smile, the three-foot koi seeming pleased as she swam in rather awkward circles, always coming back to that dangling hand. She paused to nibble at his fingers. Ahti smiled.
"I missed you, too, Goldy."
Just a short little slice-of-life snippet I felt needed to be written to go with these pieces. The pictures were drawn by ada_oz and seriously, COMMISSION HIM! He's awesome! This features FBA Draft Candidate Ahti Nereus and his beloved pet koi, Goldy. 16 years, they've been the best of friends.
I love how these turned out, and I love how much personality the pictures get across. It's beautiful. ^^
