The Rose Cormorant (Phalacrocorax rutilicaput) is most commonly found along the southwestern coastlines of North and South America and favors dry, rocky areas. Its large feet allow it to cross soft sand without sinking, and special hairs around the nostrils keep the airways clear in dust and sand storms. Despite its size, it is capable of flight and very nomadic, traveling vast distances to find the most productive feeding grounds. Its preferred food is the lesser olive dragon-eel; its thick, oily feathers protect it from the powerful jaws of its prey.
