Your put your ray gun back into the ship's reactor to refuel after reaching orbit. Below you is an alien planet singing your name, free from tyranny for the first time in living memory; nothing remaining of the robot slave-masters but a pile of smouldering servos and circuit boards. The ship's autopilot is already programmed with the next subspace fold, so all that's left for you to do is hang up your space suit, slip on your jammies, and crawl into bed for a well deserved nap.

You try to tell yourself it's worth it. You try to tell yourself that you're not homesick; this ship is more home to you than any planet, star system or galaxy in the universe. You try to tell yourself you're not lonely; saving the universe one planet at a time doesn't leave any room for anyone to tag along with you, after all. Of course it's worth it, knowing that you're making the universe a better place, one world at a time. It just... doesn't make the time in between any less hard.
