Elliot gently leaned against the glass window of the cab as it rumbled on, a building knot of anticipation forming in the pit of his stomach. To say he was nervous was a tragic understatement - the young hybrid was far more than just that. Anxious, terrified, worried, paranoid, and most of all, afraid. After all, what if she didn't like him after all this time? If sounded paranoid, even to him, but knowing it was probably irrational didn't make the fear any less real.
The skabbit found himself clinging to his proportionally massive tail, cuddling up into the thick, comforting fluff like a cub might cling to a security blanket, an old nervous habit of his he just couldn't seem to kick.
The sparsely populated field of gold on the other side of the dull highway divider was a far cry from the concert jungle he was accustomed to. To see such vibrant color in nature instead of plastered on a billboard was entirely new to him. Like an explorer stumbling upon a new land, he felt a strange sense of intimidation and opportunity.
The cab driver, obviously relying on a GPS to find his route, gently pulled off the empty highway onto a side road Elliot wouldn't have noticed even if he was looking for it. It wasn't labeled; no sign gave it any sort of identity. It was the kind of road one only used if they lived on it, and it seemed to stretch on for miles. Elliot had to pull his head from the window, the now much bumpier journey making his previous pose unbearable.
Glancing down at his phone, he could feel his anticipation building up again. Hardly even a cell signal, he found himself looking at their text logs. Not all the way back, of course not. Just a few weeks reading over his sudden decision to make it happen after months of joking about it. The planning that followed the decision, and finally, the last text in the log, from himself. "I've just landed. Be there soon - love you."
Again he felt the cold hand of fear clutching at his chest, more real than ever now as buildings rose up in the distance and the GPS chirped its final directions. He fiddled with one of his long bunny ears, the usually perky things splayed back nervously.
And finally, he was there - the end of the road, figuratively and literally, the dirt road served the sole purpose of servicing the large farm. He bit into his bottom lip, taking a few deep breaths and wondering if she was just as nervous as he. The cab gently pulled up in front of the main building, a large two story house, old time charm in abundance. Rocking chairs on the porch, a friendly-if-worn paint job, even a white picket fence surrounding a well-kept garden, it looked something straight out of a postcard.
Elliot gathered up his courage for a long moment, staring out to the farm, until a polite cough from the driver spurred him on. Gathering up his backpack and his tail, he stepped out into the open air. It was clean, none of the smog or smoke he was so accustomed to present. To put it simply, the air itself seemed fresh, like it was coming straight from the forest to his lungs rather than being recycled and tainted. It smelled nice.
Stepping to the back of the cab, he pulled out two rather large suitcases - his entire wardrobe and anything else he might need in his new home. He reached up, closed the trunk... And was greeted with the first real glimpse of his girlfriend ever, and she the same. Years of dating leading up to their first meeting. Seeing her face, the ball of worry that had been building up in his chest for the past month instantly melted away, a goofy grin spreading across his muzzle. Dropping his bags, the hybrid scurried up to the horse who was doing same, her grin matching his.
Without a single word passing between them, they pulled each other into a tight, comforting embrace, his massive tail coiling around her leg and her arms clinging him tight. A few nuzzles, a long loving kiss, affectionate stares in each other's eyes, all validating what they had known for years. They were madly in love.
The moment seemed to stretch on forever, a gentle breeze running through their fur and the gentle rumble of an engine in idle the backdrop to the beginning of the rest of their lives together. Clementine let out an affectionate little whinny, nuzzling up against his fluffy cheeks. "You're shorter than I imagined." She softly giggled, pulling him even closer.
"Really? Those are our first words together? How poetic." He gently chided, smile growing all the wider.
