A piece of development art I sketched several months ago for the "Cunning Little Vixen" project, of the dream she has in act 1... an attempt at the style of cartoonist Roy Ramonde. I now know the saturated yellow is not what I want in the final, I was looking for purple and silver for this scene, but I enjoy the piece... which is strange, nothing about it seems to work right, but I'm very charmed at how it turned out!
(Whistles theme from dream... F#~ G#~ F~ F#~ G# F#. Funny how three notes can seem so magical.)
Watercolor on paper, a few inches around...

Is that a ginormous $ sign? Also, every time I see a watercolor piece like this I wonder if I will ever pic up a brush instead of my pens. Somehow I'm more drawn right now to the precision I can apply with pinpoints, but the effects one can achieve with brushes are nice as well...maybe one day. Have you any advice on how to start out with brush techniques as a beginner like me?
Precision is admirable for the beginner... I don't remember much how I started, except that I got into watercolor by way of applying ink lines with a rigger brush, that should help with your precision problems. But start with lines, and gradually work your brain up to areas of flat color. But my advice is to keep your hand relaxed. Unlike a pen, you won't gain anything by a tense grip - it won't be fluid, and the pigment should travel from the brush to the paper wherever it contacts. "Gentle" is your key word. Start simple and move up... And take good care of your brushes, I'll add!
