Supremely late, but still forever memorable. The furries of New Jersey simply have no match. There is an enthusiasm and pure joy to being able to host my Voice Acting Workshop at FA: United, and it was no different in 2012. Though it did bring special challenges.
I can't remember the name of the room I was put in. All I remember is that it was way too small. It quickly overcrowded until every seat was taken and people were filling the back wall. On top of that, the air conditioning was LOUD. And it was a hot day, so turning it off meant sweating so much, I must have looked like I took a shower in my clothes. I hope no one took any photographs of me at that panel.
Even with the AC off, the room was noisy. When I brought the recordings back to my studio, I was pretty heart-broken at how much noise there was in the room-- using the noise reduction techniques I had learned in film school would have taken weeks to edit. And sadly, that was partly why I sat on this one for so long. It was just going to be too difficult to clean up.
But then this summer, my company gave me a new job-- to go record people remotely in all kinds of crazy locations. I've now been doing it for four months, and I have learned SO much. New mic techniques, new styles of editing, but most of all, I discovered that digital noise plug-ins have gone from the awful, nasty sounding things of my college days to just breath-taking quality. Once I realized how good the software my job had bought me worked, I made a point of buying my own and used it to edit this panel.
There's still artifacts for sure. It could be better with more time and more concentration. But man, if you could hear this BEFORE the plug-ins, you'd see just how impressively this pulls the dialogue out of the noise. Almost makes me wish I had left that air conditioner on.
Hope you enjoy!

Yeah! For a quick and easy-to-you noise suppressor, get Waves NS-1. It's on sale right now!

I used a combination of NS-1 and Waves' X-Noise plug-ins to get rid of the mess in these recordings. There are certain voices that work better with one over the other, but X-Noise is more complex and harder to use. NS-1 is crazy simple-- just push up the fader and bam. Done. And being on sale is a good plus.

Oh yeah, it was very crowded. And it makes sense to let people have a chance. I guess I was talking more about my nerves to go up a second time near the end when less and less people were volunteering. XP
Guess I'll just have to try and catch you the next time you do it at a con I'm at. Though you do have quite the back log right now.

That isn't going to slow down my appearances. The backlog is from all the time I spent working on my other project, the FBA. But that's off my plate now, so I'm concentrating on catching up on previous recordings, and I'm planning on hosting more panels. Right now I'm scheduled for RMFC and Rainfurrest, and looking to get into FC and Furry Fiesta.
I'd love to go back, I love going to FA:U! It's always a challenge for me because of coming in from California, and the con is so quickly after RMFC, which is a must-go con for me. The year that I did this panel, I actually took two weeks off from work and went straight from Denver to New Jersey, which was crazy, but a lot of fun. But also did get me in trouble at work, since this con also comes up during the busiest time for me. :(
At the moment, I don't have any plans to return to FA:U, but I'll try every year to get back there. I have some really good friends in the New Jersey area, as well as family-- just need work and timing to cooperate better, I guess!
