I whimper as I stare out the window and the neighborhood stares back at me. “It's been three months since they left and I haven't heard from Mommy, Daddy, Oniichan, or Oneesan. I...I hope they're okay. I...I jus...” Tears inch down my face as I continue to stare at the homes and cars that pass down the street.
“Caiden-kun...” Utsukushi walks over to me and stares out the window, “You miss them don't you? You're worried about your Mommy and Daddy, your Big Brother and Big Sister.” She runs a hand through my hair and kneels down, “Don't worry, Caiden.” Once she sees the tears inching down my face and my shaking shoulders, “Oh, sweetie, come here.” She pulls me into a warm hug and rubs my back, “They're fine, I assure you.”
“But...but, what if...if they...they don't...don't come...ba...ba..back? What if...if...WAAAAH!” I lay my head on her shoulder and wrap my arms around her neck as my tears drown her robes, “I...I'm sucha baby, huh? I'm crying about them being gone and yet I've got the bestest person to care for me right here in their absence. I...I… WAAAAAH! I…I jus…I jus miss them so much! I…I…I don’t….I don’t….WAAAAAH!”
Utsukushi holds me closer and rubs my back while my frustrated cries echo across the Main Hall, “Caiden-kun, you are not a baby, you are a unique seven-year-old that has many abilities that even I, your alternate self couldn’t have fathomed.” Smiling, she pulls me out to her eye level and pushes a lock of my black hair free of my eyes, revealing the emerald suns at their center, “You are lovable, kind, gentle, and you must know that I love you dearly. Now,” She releases me and wipes the tears swimming within my eyes with her thumb, “dry those tears, Cai-chan. Do you feel better now?”
Whimpering and scanning her, a small smile teases my lips as my sadness falls into the depths of the void. “I….I think so.” Yawning, I hold my hands out and plop down on the floor, a silent wish to be held.
“I think you want me to hold you, am I right?” She lifts me into her arms and cradles me. Kissing my forehead, she rocks me gentle and caresses my hair, “Don’t worry, Caiden. No matter what, they will always be with you and I shall never leave your side. Do you know that, little one, my most beloved child?” She places me over her shoulder and rubs my back, “Don’t cry, there’s no need for tears. I know what will cheer you up.” Straightaway, Mat Kearney’s Fire and Rain begins to play as she carries me to the rocking chair. Sitting down, she lays me on her chest and begins rocking,
I heard you were back in town
I heard you would come around
Trying to get off the ground
Every road you went down
Walked down the old street
Just to feel the old heat
If you're burning on empty
I'll be holding a golden ring
'Cause hey hey, they don't know you like I do
I wait for the whole world to show you
Maybe we're not, not that gone
Do you ever think about me? Do you ever call my name?
Ask me now I'll give you the reasons
My love will not fade
Through the fire and rain, the fire and rain
I'll meet you half way
If you're coming the long way
Don't care what the people say
Of the prodigal runaway
'Cause hey hey, they don't know you like I do
I wait for the whole world to show you
Maybe we're not, not that gone
Do you ever think about me? Do you ever call my name?
Ask me now I'll give you the reasons
My love will not fade
Through the fire and rain, the fire and rain
We'll say goodbye, I'm gone
Oh, it hurts to hold on
If you settle your score, no, no
Pick you up off the floor
Do you ever think about me? Do you ever call my name?
Ask me now I'll give you the reasons
My love
Do you ever think about me? Do you ever call my name?
Ask me now I'll give you the reasons
My love will not fade
Through the fire and rain, the fire and rain
The fire and rain, the fire and rain
Glancing down to me, she finds my smiling face and pokes my nose, “There’s the happy little kitten I was looking for. Do you feel better now?”
Nodding and purring in contentment, I turn and cuddle into her warmth and attempt to wrap my arms around her.
Sensing my failed attempts, she stands with me extended at arm’s length. She smiles as she sets me on my feet a meter away, “You want to hug me, huh?” and extends her arms outward, “Well come here, little one.”
Tears swimming in my eyes, I waddle-run toward her and lose myself in a warm, loving, fear crushing hug, “Utsu-neechan…I…I love you so much! I love you and I don’t ever want you to leave me. If…if…if my families leave me, in any dimension….anywhere, at any time….I….I want you to be my guardian. You love me truly with an unconditional love higher than any Zentalis or furson I’ve ever met. God Himself and you are the only people I trust with my life and my care. I know that He will never leave me, but….” Tears stream down my face as I stare into her mismatched pools of light, “you won’t ever leave me either, no matter what happens, and….and I’m grateful for that.”
Smiling with tears still streaming downward, I return to her hold and savor the love, the pure energy that circulates through us. “It’s strange, I’ve been hugged before, but…but I’ve never felt…or seen this much spiritual energy coursing through a hug before. Her mind and spirit are as one, no ulterior motives, no envy, nothing negative can be found about her. That is true love for me that…that…I can’t imagine anyone else having for me.” Breaking away from her hug, I stare deep into her eyes, my sadness and confusion melted away, converted into happiness and contentment, “Utsu-neechan, don’t tell anyone of our conversations here, either mental or verbal.”
She chuckles at my request, but nods and tousles my hair, “Silly, Cai-chan, our conversations are always private. No one but God Himself shall know about them. No one else in this dimension or the other parallels shall know about what you’ve said here. I promise. I also promise that should anything happen to anyone in this dimension or other dimensions, I shall care for you for eternity until The Most High calls us to Himself and allows us to traverse the ends of this and the other universes.” She scans my solemn face and kisses my cheek, her eyes burning green as she scans the entire mansion, “So, Caiden-kun,” Her eyes focus on me and her warm smile caresses my spirit, “what would you like to do now?”
“Could we…um…could we go visit my friend, his name’s Akira and he’s a fox. He’s been my friend for the longest time and…and…he also has two brothers, David and Sam. I found them when I first tried going to school on Delta Centauri a long long time ago. Turns out that when the I.C.C.E. Commencement occurred, they found each other and live together with Akira and his Daddy Xavier and Mommy Nielyra. So, can we go see them?”
“Sure, of course we can, Caiden-kun. First though, would you like to make a cake? I think a large double layer chocolate cake and some strawberry peach lemonade to take over to them would be good, don’t you? We’ll make the desserts together, just you and me. How’s that sound?”
A bright smile and mouthwatering answers her as I almost bolt into the kitchen, held back alone by her loving hand. Turning to her, giggling and nodding, “That’s great idea! GREAT IDEA! GREAT IDEA! GREAT IDEA! I WANNA HELP! I WANNA HELP! I LOVE SWEETS! I LOVE SWEETS! I LOVE SWEETS!”
Tilting her head and allowing her hair to block one of her suns, she smiles, “I think someone’s very happy now. Come on,” She walks with me down the hall, “let’s go make those desserts.”
“Oh, dear,” She sighs as she combs through the fridge before closing it and facing me, “we need to go to the store. Come on, Caiden, up you come.” Giggling, she lifts me onto her shoulders and heads toward the Car Lot.
When we reach the garage, I scan the plethora of cars along with David and Sebastian at the computers running diagnostics on a silver 911 Turbo and a blue 911 GT3 in respective order. My eyes widen at the plethora of cars parked in front of us: her main car, a black Porsche Panamera Turbo S, a blue Porsche Cayenne next to it, a black Porsche 911 Turbo S after that, a red Porsche 911 GT3, and then my orange Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 growling at the Porsche swarm that surrounds it. I turn to her and giggle a mite before a smile replaces my laughter, “You really like Porsche don’t you?”
“Of course, I do. This is only the East Sector of the Car Lot, the West Sector holds the older models of my Porsche collection. Now,” She walks over and straps me into my carseat within her Panamera Turbo S, “let’s go.”
Yawning and cuddling into the comfy carseat, I nod and scan her through the rearview mirror, “Okay, Utsu-neechan, I’s weady!”
She smiles and nods as the neighborhood begins to speed past us, rewarding us with the Alteras Supermarket five minutes later. Parking a meter away, she hops out and heads over to the passenger to grab me and my bookbag. Setting me on my feet, she slings the backpack over her shoulder and lifts me into her arms, “Alright, Caiden, now we find a cart.” Walking inside she strolls over to the indoor cart coral and pulls one out, buckling me in the seat straightaway. Kissing my forehead, she heads toward the baking aisle, “Okay, we need flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, vanilla extract, and granulated sugar from this aisle.”
I smile at her as she grabs the higher items while I manage to grab the cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and a 2.3 kilogram bag of the sugar. With the baking goods gathered, I’m carted off to the dairy section. Seconds later shivers run down my spine as Utsukushi gathers the milk and butter, then heads toward the checkout counters. “Utsu-neechan, what about the stuff for the lemonade?”
“We already have strawberry-peach lemonade at home, Caiden. Now,” She pulls up the register and moves to the front of the cart, “help me put the stuff on the conveyor belt.”
“Okay!” Giggling and smiling, I place half the ingredients on the belt with her help and nod, “There, all done!”
The cashier smiles as she rings up the items and scans me, “He’s adorable, ma’am, how old is he?”
“He’s seven, ma’am, thank you as well.”
“Well, he’s lucky to have you for a Mommy, huh? $26.00 even.”
Utsukushi smiles as she hands the cashier the money and places the two bags in the cart, “Thank you very much.”
I scan the cart as Utsukushi places the bags inside the backseat, lifts me into the air, “Utsu-neechan, we’re going home to make the cake now?” and straps me into my carseat.
“Yes, Caiden-kun, that’s where we’re headed. When we get home, David and Sebastian are going to make the lemonade while you and I make the cake.”
“I thought we already had lemonade at home, Utsu-neechan?”
“We do, the raw ingredients for the lemonade, silly. We’ve got peaches, strawberries, water, and the blender. I also have some yogurt at home, I guess I could make smoothies actually. What do you think, Caiden, which sounds better? Strawberry-Peach Smoothies or Strawberry-Peach Lemonade?”
Smiling and licking my lips as I’m carried into the house, “I’d like smoothies, Utsukushi, as long as you let me help.”
“Very well, Caiden.” She chuckles as we halt in the kitchen and she sets me on my feet, the groceries on the counter adjacent me, “We’ll do the cake first, then make the smoothies.”
“Okay!” I waddle over to the counter she’s now hovering over and notice the huge mixer standing in front of her. “Utsu-neechan, can I help?”
“Of course, Caiden-kun. I’ve already preheated the oven to 180°C (356°F). So, we need two 20 cm (8 in) round cake pans lined with parchment paper.” Strolling toward the cupboard, she returns to me with the pans already lined with the paper and sets them next to the blender. Next, we need a bowl, a big one. Caiden,” She kneels down to me and points to cupboard, “The mixing bowls are on the bottom shelf. I need you to get me the big one in there okay?”
Nodding, “Okay!” I head toward the cupboard and remove a bowl as big as my head. Smiling, I waddle-run towards her, the bowl held high, “Is this okay, Utsu-neechan?”
She nods as she grabs the bowl and sets in front of the cake pans, “That’s perfect, Caiden! Now,” Flicking her wrist in front of her, a clear screen winks into her vision, hovering above the mixer. Scanning it close a moment, she turns to me, “Okay, now I need you to get four large eggs out of the fridge for me.”
A quick nod answers her as I enter the fridge and scan the interior. With the eggs in sight, I open the carton, grab four eggs, and shut the fridge. Smiling and waddling toward her, I hold the eggs up, “Are these good?”
“Yes they certainly are.” She ruffles my hair before taking the eggs and cracking them, allowing their contents to spill into the silver mixing bowl. “Okay,” Her eyes fall on me again, “now I need the flour, cocoa, baking powder, sugar, butter, and the vanilla extract.”
“Right!” Inching past her, I find said ingredients sitting beside the cake pans and pass each down to her one at a time as she measures out the necessary requirements, then pours them in. After adding two tablespoons of hot water, I watch as she secures the bowl on the mixer and starts the machine. “Wow, it’s really loud!”
“Yep, but it has to be! It’s going faster than my car’s engine you know!”
“Ooooh, I didn’t know that!”
“Sure is, and……” She stops the mixer when she sees the smooth chocolate batter, “There, it’s all mixed in now.” Removing the bowl, Utsukushi pours the batter into each pan, then delivers them into the waiting oven.
“So,” I scan the cakes through the oven window, then face her, “how long will it take for them to cook?”
“Thirty-five to forty minutes, though it might be longer. Now, we’ve got to make the icing while the cake is baking.”
“Icing…” My mouth waters as the words pass my lips, “I really like icing.” Averting my eyes from the cakes to Utsukushi, I smile and purr, excitement coursing through me, “So, how do we make it?”
“Well,” She walks over to the counter, her hands glowing a faint red. Straightaway, a red light shines on the counters and fades seconds later – a new bowl resting in place of the mixer and mess that stained the counters beforehand, “we need the cocoa powder, sugar, butter, and milk. Could you get them for me? They’re all in the fridge.”
“Okay, I’ll get them!” Giggling with excitement, I rush toward the fridge and after opening it, I collect the items in my arms and waddle toward the counter. Smiling at Utsukushi, I deposit the ingredients adjacent the bowl, “There, now what?”
“Now, I add the items in their necessary quantities to the bowl and beat them with this whisk.” Chuckling and holding a wire whisk, she begins adding the ingredients and beating them to the needed consistency. “There, that’s all done, and the cakes have,” She peeks at the counter above the stove, “thirty minutes left.” then faces me, “So, Caiden-kun, do you like baking with Neechan?”
Nodding quick, I run toward her and wrap my arms around her waist, “Yep! We make the best team!”
She returns my hug and pats my padded bottom, “I’m glad you think so, Caiden. Now, go and watch TV, I’ll let you know when the cake is done.”
“But, Neechan,” I cross my arms and pout, “I wanna help you with the lemonade.”
“There’s not much you can do, but I’ll let you know when I’m done so you can taste test it. Is that okay, Cai-chan?”
“Yeah, that’s fine, thanks a lot!” Smiling, I hug her again before toddling into the Main Hall and sitting on the sofa to watch cartoons.
Utsukushi sighs, elation etched into her countenance as she finishes decorating the cake, “There, it’s all done.” Her eyes shine red as the cake is surrounded by an airtight plastic cover. Smiling, she walks into the living room with the cake and finds me busy, watching cartoons. “Caiden…”
Hearing my name, I turn from the TV and smile upon finding Utsukushi holding the cake secured in a plastic container, “COOL! You decorated the cake and everything!” Waddle-running towards her, I notice the cake vanish in a puff of smoke before I wrap her in an excited bear hug, “Utsu-neechan, where’d the cake go?”
“It’s in the car with the lemonade jug, Caiden-kun. Now, let’s go see your friends.”
Smiling bright, I release her and raise my arms, “I’m ready, Utsu-neechan, my friends are going to be really surprised this time around!”
“Yes,” She lifts me into her arms and walks toward the Car Lot, “I’m sure they will be.”
