Chapter one
Pain started to well up in my stomach. Why am I feeling this pain? These doors that lead to my new future aren't huge, flaming, or covered in bones. They're just normal school doors. I've seen many of the sort. Numbing cold doorhandles and ugly faded colors from ugly faded paint. Shouldn't I be happy for a second chance? Well... For me, it's more like the millionth chance. Throughout my life I have been fluctuating between family members. You see, my dad had to give me up because he had beaten me for...well liking guys. He was a raging alcoholic and always had issues with drugs. My mom had died when I was a little kit. She was hit by a car going seventy miles per hour while she sat at a red light doing her makeup. I have pictures of her in my bedroom and my grandma used to tell me stories about her before bed. She seemed like a nice person.
About my liking guys now, I just want to say that it's not what it seems. I'm pretty normal and definitely not as flamboyant as most other homosexuals. If you looked at me, you wouldn't immediately scream gay, unless you're an asshole who does it for no reason. I have had boyfriends....er, boyfriend. His name was Reimus.
Reimus was a fox, like myself, and had nice sized muscles. He wasn't a "lean, mean fighting machine," tall, intimidating or anything like that. He was the perfect, friendly, size and shape. Cute too, very cute. Him and I met while he was waiting my table while I was with my grandpa.
I sighed quietly and opened those faded and tainted doors. I stepped inside cautiously, but yet casual enough to not look like I'm looking for redcoats during the Revolutionary War while up in a tree stand. Upon walking inside, some kids looked at me, but just casually glanced away, continuing their conversations. This is new, usually people start talking about the way I look or something. I smiled a little bit at the relief that washed over me. This school wasn't all that dirty unlike my last schools. There wasn't too much on the floors at all. Well I mean it's High School, there's bound to be some things.
I continued looking at the walls as I passed by the crowd of kids getting books and papers out of their lockers. There were plaques and trophies for sports and activities. I saw a nationals trophy for football with a kid named James Watson on the gold plate below. Suddenly some kid bumped into me.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Pardon me." The coyote that had accidentally touched me smiled and went on his way down the hall.
I kind of forgot about it since it was an accident after all. I seriously just wish that I had a tour of this place prior to today, it's like a maze! Hall after hall of lockers that all look the same. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a locker number.
"Hmm.. 459.." I thought to myself.
I glanced back up to see I was in the two hundreds range. I scratched my head, then was feeling the air conditioner, that just came on, vent above me spraying cold air at my body. It felt nice because it's like ninety degrees outside. I walked down the hall until there were only two directions to go. Left had the three hundred numbers and right had the four hundred numbers for the lockers. Right was the path I chose, obviously, and trotted down the hallway of never ending lockers until finally reaching 459. I flipped that piece of paper over and the combination was on the back. It took me awhile to put it in right since the padlock was rusty and a bit stuck at times. By the time I opened it, the bell had rung. I grabbed my physics book and took my schedule out of the butt pocket on my jeans. I know I'll be late getting to class, but I'm sure I'll be forgiven, after all I am new with no proper tour.
The room was actually close by, room 433. It was physics with a teacher named Ms. Mason. I strolled down the hall as it was starting to clear of swarming kids. Luckily I made it before the final bell. I looked from side to side, checking my surroundings, and placed my paw on the cold doorhandle. I twisted it down and pushed the metal door open. The teacher was a tall ebony cat. She glanced over at me with her intensively red feline eyes. Her pupils suddenly dilated into circles and she smiled over at me.
"Oh, you must be the new student from McLauder. What's your name, sweetie?" She had a smooth voice and her tail swayed behind her.
She had dress pants on along with a professional button down shirt. Her long fangs barely hung out of her mouth as she showed me an affectionate grin, her ears perking at small noises. The kids weren't paying attention really, mostly because class hasn't started yet.
"My... My name is Jake, Jake Michaels." I said, trying to calm down a bit.
Social situations kind of unnerve me. When I was a kit, I used to have to take anxiety medication because well, everything would scare me. I was apparently scared of my own shadow at one point.
"Well nice to meet you Mr. Michaels, please, take a seat where ever you please! Class will begin momentarily. Finishing some papers." She flicked her tail and her pupils went back to the slits that they were before.
The room was nicely lit with large windows on the left of the room and many shelves with old text books and many novels on physics. Posters of many famous scientists hung on the walls and inspirational quotes were up there as well. Typical classroom decor. My attention went towards the kids that were conversing and laughing. I saw many different species of people, mostly felines and canines. There were some really popular looking girls talking in a crowd in the back and some jock looking guys talking in another group. In the front some gray-furred wolf sat, doodling something on a piece of white paper. There was an empty seat right next to him. I walked over and plopped myself into the seat. He glanced over at me.
"Well hi there, my name is James. Are you new?" He smiled at me like the teacher and that one coyote did.
"My name is Jake and... I am new. Is your full name... James Watson?" I tilted my head a little bit, still kind of nervous.
"Yeah! Lemme guess, the trophy out there?" He chuckled and held out his paw "Nice to meet you, bro."
I shook his paw and told him it was good meeting him as well. Everyone has been so nice to me. This is amazing compared to the experiences I've had at my last school. At McLauder I made friends and ended up telling them my orientation because I trusted them you know? They stabbed me in the back by telling the school bullies that I loved dick in my mouth and am a giant slut or something. After that I was always shoved, tripped, hit, and made fun of for everything. Somehow I never made another friend for two and a half whole years. I transfered from McLauder halfway through junior year because I couldn't take it anymore. I just wish my home life was better to counteract the hate I had at school. Like most wishes, it didn't come true.
First I was living with my dad, but had to go after that incident, then there was my grandparents on my fathers side, but they were bloody religious and always mocked me and taunted me for not being straight. How'd they find out? they found... pictures I had saved on my desktop. After that was my aunt and uncle on my moms side, but they couldn't afford it after a couple months. Then it was to my grandmas house on my mothers side. She died in the hospital six months after taking me in so I had to move in with my aunt on my mothers side. She took me in, but is very cold to me. Not abusive or rude, just... gray and emotionless. She's never like that when she is with friends or other family, so I know I'm the reason she acts like that when we are together.
I looked over at Ms. Mason, who has started instructions on the morning assignments. I quickly pulled out some paper and a mechanical pencil, opening my book to chapter five.
The class went by in an hour and a half. I just barely finished reading about wormholes and answering some questions on them before the bell rang. I packed up my stuff and continued towards my next class, AP bio. I've always been really book smart. The room was across the school in an unfamiliar area. I had to ask three counselors to find it and eventually ended up at the door. This teacher was Mr. Tamland, a tall and intimidating war veteran. I looked through the small rectangular window and saw a border collie. I, once again, reached for the cold doorknob and turned it slowly. I stepped inside and it was dead silent. I could even hear the heartbeats of the other kids. The teacher stood with his paws behind his back.
"Ah, hello Jake. Please, enter." Said Mr. Tamland really casually.
How did he know my name?
"I have a few rules I'd like to share with you. There is no chewing gum, dicking around with your cellphone during class, talking when I'm talking, but you don't have to raise your paw to do something where I'm not needed. Like if you need to sharpen a pencil or something." He said, looking me dead in the eyes.
Good thing I have mechanical pencils.
"Now I have a seat in the back I'd like you to go sit at." Mr. Tamland added.
I was too terrified to answer so I nodded and quickly hurried to the only empty seat in the back. I took out some loose leaf papers and suddenly realized that I didn't have my bio book. Guess who forgot to take a trip to his locker before class? I'm so used to having a backpack that I forgot it! Damn. The fox next to me looked over and saw I had my physics book still.
"Forget your bio book?" He whispered close to my ear.
I looked over at him, "Oh... uh yeah. I'm used to having a backpack and forgot to go to my locker."
He looked at me, his brown muzzle curving into a grin, "Well when he assigns questions, I'll let you copy them out of my book."
"Ah, that'd be great, thanks... uh-"
"Derek Jane."
I nodded and gave him a thankful smile, bringing my attention back to the board, which by now had instructions written all over it. As Derek had promised, he let me write down the questions. Of course there were a lot of them so it took some time. I barely had enough time to finish. I was on the last question and the bell rang. I hurried quickly, but it was a long question so by the time I was done, I was the last one in the room. Mr. Tamland was sitting at his desk, looking at me with folded paws up to his muzzle.
"Jake, you know it's lunch time, right?" He said calmly.
"Y-yes sir, but I forgot my textbook in my locker because in my last school we had backpacks... I had to copy the questions and answer them... I'm sorry if I'm holding you up, sir..." I said, packing up my stuff nervously and quickly.
"Ah don't worry about it, but try and remember to bring your book to class so you aren't rushing on the assignments. In most cases the work students give me who rushed hand in shit." He still looked as calm as ever, but not in a threatening way.
All I could do was nod and rush up to his desk, handing him the paper.
"G-goodbye." I said, stuttering some.
"Have a nice day Mr. Michaels."
I rushed out of the room after thanking him and power walked towards my locker. I had more trouble trying to open the damn thing once I got there because of how old it is. It creaked loudly as I swung it open. An eternity later, I put all my stuff in the dusty metal cage. I reached into my pocket for my lunch money that wasn't there anymore. I must have dropped it somewhere. Today had been going well before the book incident and now this? I sighed and stuffed my paws into my pockets, heading after the crowd of kids entering the cafeteria. I looked ahead and saw that James kid talking to a vixen. I didn't want to bother him so I just kept walking. To where? Who knows. I guess I really don't need lunch that much, since I ate breakfast not that long ago.
Outside there was a lot of red benches and a food truck parked in the corner. I've never seen something like that at a school, usually it's mystery meat and cheap fake side dishes. Here I saw kids eating tacos and pizza and hamburgers that looked amazing. I wandered around the area where I'm allowed thirty minutes of contained freedom each day. I saw Derek over in a corner eating by himself. He had his phone out and also a headset was on his head. His head fur was messy and his tail was wagging some. He looked to be enjoying himself so I didn't want to disturb him. At this point I was lost at what to do so I decided to go look around the school for my next class.
I took my schedule out of my butt pocket again and unfolded it. My next class was study hall followed by calculus. Study hall was close to Ms. Masons classroom; 438. Calculus was somewhere upstairs in the five hundreds. I didn't really need to go look for study hall since it's in a familiar place, but I needed to go look for math. I followed the direction in which the class numbers rose and eventually found room 512 with Mrs. Leah, a short white wolf that has on glasses. She was sitting at her desk with her head down. She looked exhausted. I crept away and tried not to make any noise to disturb her.
