There's a story behind this, literally. I had been working on an illustrated story called "Doll Marion", about a doll carved out of Eller Wood who came to life. It was a sort of Pinocchio story, with much darker elements, including The Forget-Me-Nots (a people who are generous and hospitable and outdo themselves to make guests comfortable in their town, but are doomed to be instantly forgotten the moment the guests leave town), and a scene in which people are killed and strung up like puppets -- a horrifying discovery for a living marrionette. The story leads up to a confrontation with The Machine Maid. She was a witch who enslaved a race of mechanical people from their inventor. After rebelling, they killed her and trapped her brain in this mechanical form. They shouldn't have shown even that much mercy, since she eventually got the upper hand again...

I've never been able to stick to writing for more than a few thousand words before a) I become interested in someting else, and b) I desparately need money and can't wait until I finish writing a novel (assuming I could even sell it in short of another year). Most professional writers spend all their spare time writing. They don't watch TV, have friends, spend time with the family, practise shooting hoops, or (ironically) even reading books after work. They write. And I'm just not that obsessive.
What struck me, is that most people think Pinocchio is NOT a dark story, (thanks mostly do to Disney) the original is far darker than most other kids stories. Far darker than even Alice in Wonderland which is already very dark. (again you may not know this if Disney is your only source) In the original Pinocchio, there is several deaths, lots of betrayals, and Pinocchio doesn't just do 'one good deed to be forgiven' but has to suffer inhumanly (in-puppetly?) hard for an extended time to 'earn' his chance to rescue his father. And Oh yeah, the cricket is not dressed in a top hat and Pinocchio squashes him!
I love the scene at the beginning where the wood Gepeto will carve Piniocchio fram starts talking. Gepeto thinks some naughty kid has somehow climbed into the log, and starts bashing it violently against the walls to teach him a lesson! Then there's Pinocchio's hanging.
One curious detail is that the Blue Fairy has a white face and blue hair. I came across that again years after originally reading the book, and wondered if it had had any influence on my character Saara Mar's blue hair and white fur. Could have been just a retro-coincidence.
