I don't think the background destroys anything; in fact, I wanted only a minor pattern with a pastell palette to not distract too much from the bright colours and main motif. I am sorry this choice doesn't find your approval but I am quite pleased with the outcome.

I understand your wish to focus the viewers attention on the creature, though, in my opinion, the stylized leaves distract my eyes a bit and it breaks the overall feeling. But, as said before, it is just my opinion. I know, a blank area is always inviting to fill it. In the case we git here it would have been better to leave it blank - just my opinion.
