According to your description on the spirit's personality, I could see him taking advantage of her from time to time since it's perverted and all. Another idea is that maybe she has a newly found power and the tail comes to life as an effect and teachers her how to control it. However on the conditions of it calling the shots. This is just an idea I'd thought you might like to look into.
