
The coal trains were as dependable as February snow. You could catch their whistles in the lonely hours, just before sunrise. Their cars, outbound from the mines, cut the town in half: unaware and asleep on either side. They were motion and sound in an otherwise still and silent place. Something I could relate to. So it was sometimes hard to keep myself from meeting them.
