Wow, remember me? I had a bit of a lull in my music writing because of some life events like changing jobs (to a much better one) and due to learning a new environment for music writing... I think I've finally discovered something that I really like in Reaper with Shreddage and a few other great-sounding plugins. I hope that you'll think as I do that this is, rather than a jarring change, the next step in my musical sound.
Here's a song inspired by a story that really captivated me - if you haven't played the Zero Escape series, then do so immediately! They have an amazing storyline that starts you off totally clueless and ends bigger than you could possibly imagine.
Lyrics (You might want to stay away if you want to be completely surprised by the game!)
Welcome to my kingdom!
They live out their lives
Confined in their minds
Never to know they need a guide
The paths that they take
The choices they make
They don't know they are blind
I've brought you to here
Through madness and fear
Where all your choices matter most
Ask why you can see
And how did you know
Have you lived this before
This is your destiny
To rewrite history
Take hold of the future to conquer the past
I'm not alive or dead
I am what's in your head
What you are, I was
What I am, you will be
Through worlds
Through time
I'll show you the way
Like you did before me
To alter my fate
Your soul
Your mind
Transcending the void
I'll cast you through realities
And I am zero
Through infinite time
And parallel worlds
Streams of the universe divide
A future to learn
You'll die and return
Forced to live through them all
I am your destiny
Your fate and history
Go back to the future to conquer the past
I'm not alive or dead
I am what's in your head
What you are, I was
What I am, you will be
Through worlds
Through time
I'll show you the way
Like you did before me
To alter my fate
Your soul
Your mind
Transcending the void
I'll cast you through realities
And I am zero
Open the door
To unmask the betrayer of time
This is your purpose
To rescue the world and mankind
What you are, I was
What I am, you will be
Nine hours
Nine doors
Nine lives to be saved
The portals are closed
Leaving zero escape
Through worlds
Through time
The answers arise
I'll cast you through the threads
Of space and time
That make reality
Through worlds
Through time
I'll show you the way
Like you did before me
To alter my fate
(The path of the universe)
For you
For me
For all of the world
I'll guide you to your destiny
And I am...
We are
She is
You are
I am
Who is
Where is
They are
You are me
You will be zero

Oh man, what to say about this track. First off, I have to say the guitar work is definitely surpassing what you have done previously. Not only production wise, which sounds fantastic with Shreddage (which I have not heard of, but I’m assuming it's a VST, which I am promptly going to check out if I can get their website working), but the both the riffs and leads in the non-vocal sections are great. Un-expectantly heavy coming what I’ve heard of your previous stuff (love the incorporation of artificial harmonics, great), but still your trademark sound. Comes across very Avantasia-sounding, especially the Toy Master. The leads are much more defined and intricate than in prior pieces. Always love harmonised solos, something I need to work on.
Admittedly I've never heard of Zero Escape, although a little background reading suggests it’s on platforms that I do not own. Will have to find some other means to experience it.
Sweet stuff man, keep rockin’ \m/

Thank you! Yes, Shreddage is a VST by Impact Soundworks - it's on its second-and-a-half version now and it's incredible how close it can sound to an actual guitar, for something played by the computer. The introduction here is the heaviest I plan to go in this style - I'm planning to stay melodic :)
And I love Avantasia's sound (as well as Tobias Sammet's general approach to music), so that is a huge compliment - thank you very much :)

Hmm....
Kinda difficult to judge since I've got nothing up regarding music, but as far as what I like and what my own tastes are, I'll give this a shot.
The song seems to be attempting a fusion between typical heavy metal styles heard in the 80s and the more modern speed/power metal styles heard today. While the rhythm and chorus sections of the song are fine, the solo is a little bit of a let-down. Needs a bit more speed. Often enough, if you play a solo for a band, playing the notes in a melodic, scaled-form, much like you hear a lot of the older metal bands do, but at around twice the speed of the set tempo, you'll get a bit more attention.
Just... feels like if you're gonna put a solo into a power-metal song, make it the true peak of the song.
Otherwise, sounds great. :) The comment above mine is exactly what I was thinking. Production sounds alot better.

Thanks for your thoughts, those are very valuable! I've just moved up from an environment where I didn't really have the ability to produce a guitar-like solo at all, so discovering the possibilities of flourishing with the guitar VST more is definitely something I'm looking forward to :)
