The Glass Half Full had been empty for almost an hour, not that it surprised the owner. Anna rarely had any customers between the lunch rush and quitting time for the commercial district. Even less often did she hear Jace before she saw him. Halfway through wiping down the bar, she paused and looked around, almost expecting the wolf-dog to step out of some shadowy hiding place with a growl both intimidating and alluring. She’d let Cera take a break between the rush hours - the same as she’d been doing all week - but it wasn’t entirely out of generosity. If her merc would just show up already, she might make use of the down time the same way Cera was.
When the door swung open and Jace’s easy-going laugh reached her ears even behind the counter, the aussie shepherd figured it must be her lucky day. If he’s in such a good mood, she smirked to herself, it might be time to hang up the Closed sign for an hour or so. Any thoughts along those lines crashed to a halt when two other voices followed him in. Setting aside the bottle of her family’s whiskey, she huffed a quiet sigh. Damn that scoundrel; this had been one of his longest contracts. Sometimes she wondered if the wolf-dog even noticed how long he was away, or if he even thought of it as ‘away’.
Putting on her best bartender smile, she stood up and spread her hands across the bar. “Good afternoon,” she managed cheerily. “Jace, I see you’ve brought friends.”
The other two were still laughing at whatever joke they were sharing, so she let her eyes wander as she poured Jace his usual brew. The gent’s fur marked him fairly easily as an alsatian shepherd, but the ears couldn’t possibly be. Maybe part aussie, or collie. The girl at his side, however, was definitely an aussie shepherd. She stood a whole head below him, but carried herself like a captain. When a warm breeze followed them in, Anna realized why. With all the times that Cera had brought Darius by, she now knew how hard it was to get the smells of coolant, oil and fuel cells out of fur. If she wasn’t a mechanic, then she had to be an starship engineer.
“You’re a bit late for lunch,” Anna continued, sliding the poured beer down to Jace’s waiting hand, “but I can still whip up some pies if you like. Or I can set you up with a round of drinks, provided it’s nothing too exotic.” She shot Jace a brief glare, hoping he’d finally stop ordering his Hope on the Rocks. “What would you like?”
Just then, the alsatian caught his breath and looked up, as if noticing her for the first time. A moment later, the little aussie gal followed his gaze. Though she regarded Anna with what seemed to be cautious curiosity, her companion elbowed Jace in the ribs.
“Watch out, Taer, looks like she’s pissed at you. How often do you come here?”
Jace coughed and arched his brow. “Anna, this is DJ and Toni.”
The alsatian and the little aussie strode up to the bar. DJ requested her best ale, then added, “Tall,” anticipating her next question.
Anna nodded and turned to fill a glass from the tap. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the aussie engineer, Toni, hiss something at DJ. His eyes flicked to Anna momentarily, and she turned quickly back to filling his beer. When she turned back, the alsatian pilot was cheerful as ever, but Toni could have torched his fur with her gaze. Pretending not to notice, Anna set his ale in front of him and smiled.
“Something for you, dear?” she asked the aussie.
“No,” Toni replied softly, still trying to burn holes in DJ’s cheek.
Anna shrugged and glanced back to the pilot, “Anything else for you?”
He thought for a moment, then glanced up and over her head. “As a matter of fact, I’d like a glass of your Commodore’s Private Stock.”
Anna glanced over her shoulder and frowned. That particular bottle was on the top shelf. Easy now, she told herself, not as though you haven’t done this before. “Certainly,” she murmured, rising up on her toes and stretching to grasp the bottle. Over her shoulder, she heard a low hum. Fighting the urge to look back, she grabbed the bottle and snatched a glass off the back wall. She’d just finished pouring DJ’s portion when his voice peaked,
“He’s damn-well looking, why can’t I? Hell, even you oughta be - ow, OW!”
Anna turned and set his glass on the bar, but DJ was busy trying to pry Toni’s claws off his ear.
“We’ve been in town a grand total of ten minutes and you’re sizing up the bartender!”
“Am not!” DJ shot back, forgetting she still had his ear. “Ow! I said she was cute, not cuter!” When she didn’t relent, he looked to Jace. “Help me out, Taer.”
Over the rim of his glass, the wolf-dog replied, “He did say Anna was cute, miss, but I don’t think he meant she was more so than you.”
“See?” the pilot stammered.
Still frowning, Toni released him.
DJ managed to muffle a growl as he rubbed his ear. “If I ever decide to get a piercing, I’ll just call you. It’s cheaper that way.”
The aussie huffed and turned to Anna. “I’ll take a glass of Bad Horse.”
“Ah, c’mon, Toni…” Turning to Jace again, “Taer, who’s the better looking?”
Barking out a laugh, “Between the two of us? Ask me a real question.”
“Real funny. I mean Toni and Anna here.”
Jace shook his head, still laughing. “Oh no, you’re in that minefield all by yourself.”
“You’re supposed to be objective here! What are you, sweet on her?”
Anna had gone back to tidying up the bar, but her ears perked up despite her best intentions. Without looking, she knew Jace had nearly choked on his last swallow of beer. Glancing his way, she saw the wolf-dog look at DJ, then back at her. The alsatian followed his gaze and a grin crossed his muzzle.
“Well now…” He opened his muzzle as if to say more, but a soft clicking made everyone turn. Toni sat comfortably on one of the barstools, tapping her claws together as she regarded DJ with an arched brow. Flustered, he coughed and continued. “That is… Not what I expected…” Something caught his eye behind the bar, behind Anna, and he grinned again. “But, seeing as we’re at a bit of an impasse, maybe we can settle this conundrum another way.”
“And what might that be?” Toni chimed in.
Still peering behind the counter, DJ raised a furred finger. “Anna, what’s that ribbon for?”
Everyone followed his gesture, but Anna shrugged. “My family’s whiskey won first prize in the region last year.”
At that, DJ’s eyes widened. “You don’t say?” His eyes scanned the shelves, trying to pick out her label. After a moment, he turned back to her. “I’ll have to try it some time.”
Jace cleared his throat. “What’s this you’re scheming up?”
The pilot ignored him. “Could I borrow that ribbon for just a bit?”
Anna seemed to consider for a moment, then snatched the ribbon off the wall and held it out to him. “What for?”
“Ladies, what do you say to a competition?”
For a long few seconds, the silence held, then Toni murmured, “What kind?”
The alsation-collie gave a wolfish smile. “Wrestling.”
Jace leaned back, but Toni cast Anna a glance and shrugged off her jacket. “All right, let’s clear a spot.”
“Oh no you don’t,” Anna warned, in a tone that allowed no argument. “Not in here.”
“Backing out?” Toni asked with a bittersweet smile.
Anna matched it. “I didn’t say that.”
“What are you proposing, then?” DJ leaned against the bar.
Anna’s scowl turned to a grin that gave Jace shivers when she looked his way. “Flip the sign, lock the door and meet me out back.”
“You’ve got to be joking!” Jace practically shouted.
In spite of the encroaching city, there was a small field behind the Glass Half Full, and the melted snow had not completely sunk into the ground. As luck would have it, the afternoon sun was utterly unobscured by clouds, revealing a veritable bowl of mud where the grass had yet to grow back. And in the middle of the sludgy soup sat the blue ribbon labeled simply “1st”. DJ stood beside Toni, not bothering the shake the mud from his feet and leggings. Jace stood between Anna and Toni, eying the pit. Warm as it was, a healthy gust was still enough to make even the wolf-dog shiver. Beside him, Anna looked over at Toni, and seemed to sense apprehension.
“Backing out?” she murmured to Toni.
The alsatian-shepherd flushed and huffed, shoving her jacket into DJ’s hands. “Not a chance.”
Grinning, Anna handed hers to Jace and quickly pulled off her sapphire shirt as well.
“All right then,” DJ beamed. “Rules are simple : Bare hands only, no cheap shots…and no time outs.”
That caught Jace’s attention, and he wondered briefly if the girls were considering the implications of such a rule with the thin-strapped undergarments they were wearing. When Anna began shuffling out of her pants, too, he couldn’t muzzle himself fast enough.
“Uh, Anna…?”
The shepherd gal paused and shot him a look that was part warning and part temptation. “Oh c’mon, Jace.” Stepping out of the mud-brown leggings, “It’s not like you haven’t seen me in these already.”
Behind her, she heard Jace utter a strangled, incredulous noise akin to a whimper, and DJ barked out a laugh that left him gasping for air. Stepping up beside the similarly scantily-clad Toni, she couldn’t help but smile. Glancing at Toni, though, she saw the little aussie’s gaze fixed intently on the ribbon as she crouched down, a sprinter at the starting block. Anna let her smile fall and dropped to the same pose. Meanwhile, DJ finally regained his breath and walked up beside Toni.
“May the cutest shepherd win. Ready? … GO!”

Heeeeeeeeeeee!!! Like I said when you let me take a look at this, it's SUCH a great read. The back and forth between each character is absolutely adorable and spot-on. It's also an awesome look into stuff that isn't all serious in our Star Wars 'verses. Which, IMO, is a completely necessary thing now and then!
This makes me wonder how Anna and Toni will be around each other once the contest is won.

Thank you for beta-reading for me, Koof!
I'm so glad to hear that the story came out well. I was worried it would be too conversation-heavy.
And yes, we should have some more whimsical and funny pieces in our 'verse!
Not sure if this is going to be canon, but in either case, I'd wager the girls would make amends over a drink, then bond over pranking or pestering the boys.

So sorry it took me soooo long to get to this! Things were crazy in October and even the end of September.
First off thank you soooo much for writing this. It was a very well thought out explanation to this piece of fanservice that Deej and you came up with. So fuckin' cute. And I love that we get to see Anna and Tony pit their feisty natures against each other. Well done!

No worries at all! You had a lot to handle.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this piece. I wasn't sure I'd done DJ and Toni justice, but it sure was fun to take a break from the more serious and somber topics our works usually cover.
As always, your work is quite the inspiration. Keep it up!
