She is a mix of technology and magic. A group of ponies had been doing experiments after discovering alien (human) technology. Nano was the only really successful mix of technology and magic. Her strong earth pony body made this possible when all other types of ponies failed. However, She wasn't a willing lab rat. She escapes with the only other pony the lived through these horrible experiments. She now takes care of the weak sickly sad excuse for a peg pony. I'm working on this peg now. :)
