So the fursuiting group Emerald City Critters is still active as ever in local events. This is the most recent one that I was a part of; the Susan Komen Race for the Cure, a breast cancer charity event.
This was a very fun event to be a part of but also one that has a lot of meaning to me. Many of us know someone who has battled breast cancer in one way or another and a lot of those folks who survive do so at a terrible cost. As a healthcare worker I work closely with a lot of cancer patients by helping to monitor their cancer's progress and treat some of the conditions they develop in the process. One of those conditions is called a pleural effusion, where fluid collects in the space between the lung and the chest wall and makes breathing difficult. When it's bad enough the patient can literally suffocate because their lungs are too constricted by the fluid; they literally drown. One of my roles at work is to provide ultrasound guidance during the Thoracentesis procedure that drains this fluid and helps the person breathe better. It's a very bright moment in my day when these people are brought into my room in a wheelchair and then when they leave they're pushing the chair out themselves.
This event collected money for low-income women to get mammograms and help catch cancer early on so they can have a better chance at surviving it.
