Captain Edward Kassidy was a former human test subject in order to create the perfect soldier. Willingly injected with a super virus that would increase his strength and agility. In addition it would also grant infinite stamina and a healing factor that would instantly heal all wounds. The experiment was a complete failure and instead mutated him into a mindless rage zombie. The experiment was then initially scrapped by shooting him once in the face and multiple times in the chest.

On the way to have his body disposed of in an incinerator, Kassidy had reawaken and brutally slaughtered his captors to escape from the compound in which he was experimented on. After his initial "resurrection" the virus took full effect, giving him back his sentience, although now it is irrationally fueled by anger. Along with rapidly healing many wounds, at least as well as a decomposing corpse could be healed anyway. All but the massive hole in the side of his mouth, thus he drilled an iron lock onto his face to keep it from falling apart.

Decades later after the fall humanity, Kassidy now known as Deadlocke leads a militia of sentient zombie marauders known as the "Outkast" who pillage the wastelands looking for living creatures to capture and eat as they need raw flesh to survive.
