How do you go about laying out your characters on a single sheet for real-media character references?

Well, I make light pencil guide marks - where I want the feet to be, and the heads... and then I draw very simple gestural poses before I refine any details so I know they all fit on the sheet together...

a jackal, and a 'real' one, too. most are shown looking like some descendant of a certain egyptian deity... and his legs look strong enough to actually be able to bear the weight. rarely seen around... most are too filigreed.
