Bicker by NightlySnow
Bicker howled into the night sky, her yellow eyes glaring out of the forest. The male human screamed, knowing what she was. He took off running, thinking he could out run the beast. But to Bicker, this was the best part. She waited ten seconds, allowing the pasty white male to get a head start. She smiled as she got ready to take off.
The moon shined through the clouds, giving her the signal to charge. The moonlight revealed the pursuer to be a blue Merle Hellhound with dark graffiti and appaloosa spots. The man screamed as the Hellhound caught up in a matter on minutes, jumping into the air and attacking the damned human. She started to rip him up, making him pay for his dastardly deeds. His screams were loud and painful, but soon died down until nothing but the sound of ripping noises was heard. She had completed her mission and was getting ready to go back to the underworld, when a scream sounded in the moonlit night.
She turned around to see a five year old human girl, running up to the corpse she had just ripped to pieces. “Daddy. DADDY!” The human child cried, his blood soaking her little pink dress. Most Hellhounds would have just left or attacked the little girl, but for some reason, the cries of sadness from the small human hit her heart. It made her see what kind of damage she had just done to this little girl and his family.
Was this man really deserving of this act? The Hellhound traveled home, back to hell. She entered her sleeping area, where she happened to also receive her assignments. She dug through her files, trying to find his record. Her muzzle dropped as she found out why she was sent to kill him. His ex-wife, and the mother of the daughter she saw that very night, suspected him of cheating and called upon the gods to kill him.
Her muzzle dropped in shock at such a reason. She understood the pain that could be felt from a love one betraying, but the ex only suspected and had no proof. Once more, what kind of mother lets her child outside when she knows a Hellhound is on the hunt? Bicker started to question her kill and if it was justified. She was questioning her job and if any quest of hers was justified.
Even though Hellhounds lived in a fiery place, all the hounds had a heart of ice. They were coldblooded killers. But, Bicker was feeling different and she was unsure what triggered it. She sat in her sleeping spot, watching her fur burn to a crisp and fall off. Within hours, the flames ate all the fur she had grown on the surface to reveal her tanned blue skin, her bones sticking out as if she had been eating unhealthy. A pain started to form on her head and she could feel her goat horns starting to grow. It was unknown if the darkness had a different time frame or not, but for some reason her horns and quills grew fully in a matter of days. While, on the surface, her horns and fur could take months.
“What are you doing?” Asked her friend Quarrel. He walked up to her, a smile on his face, which quickly turned neutral once he saw her expression. “Are you okay?” He asked, setting his boney tail on her shoulder.
She glanced around, making sure no one was in hearing range. “I'm breaking out.” She said in a hushed tone to him. “All these missions are pointless. Some of these humans don't deserve eternity in Hell.” A tear formed from her eye but instantly turned to steam.
“It's not our place to judge. It's our job to take care of business.” He spoke with wisdom, or so he thought.
“No.” She yelled, unaware she had an ease dropper. “They don't judge. They just take any deal because it sends another soul to be tortured here. As soon as night falls, I'm breaking out.” She laid down, closing her eyes. “I just need to rest.” The ease dropper quietly exited to inform Cerberus of the betrayal about to come.
Night fell quickly, and Bicker got prepared to leave. She knew she wouldn't have any trouble leaving as long as she didn't draw suspension. She trusted her friend and knew he didn't tell a soul about what she spoke of. She started to walk down the path to the surface, a normal path taken by many Hellhounds. It wouldn't have been unusual for her to be taking it, she could have easily been on her way to do an assignment.
She nodded to fellow Hellhounds. She knew a good majority of their names, but she didn't consider them friends. She was nearing the transition chamber, a big canyon that had many connecting tunnels that led to different parts of the world. She entered the big open space, the smell of humans hitting her nostril. She looked around at different tunnels, trying to pick the right one.
“It doesn't matter which one...” She whispered to herself, picking a far one. She started to walk towards......
A boney tail slammed in front of her, almost making her jump out of her skin. She followed the tip of the tail to the connecting body, her jaw dropping at what she saw.
“Hi, Cerberus. A good day for killing.” She spoke confidently like nothing was wrong.
“You dare betray me and Hellhound kind?” Came his godlike voice, echoing in the vast chamber.
“What!?!” She was shocked. How would he know about anything about this? Did Quarrel betray me? No. He wouldn't do that. I know he didn't do that. “I don't know you're talking about. I'm on a mission.”
“You have not been assigned anything.” Came his deep voice.
“Yes....I was.” She plead, trying to convince the terrifying three headed dog. The three headed dog began to growl, knowing she was lying. He bared his teeth, drool dripping from all the heads. She could feel her body shake from the scary sight, but she had to get out of here. Even, if she had to go head on with Cerberus.
She dropped into a defensive stance, her eyes searching for an easy escape. No, any escape. Unfortunately, the massive dog blocked all the entrances. She would have to confront three headed dog and fight for her freedom. Was she willing to sacrifice her life? Was she willing to die for what she believed in?
She ran towards the dogs front right leg, opening her mouth wide. If she was going to die, she was going to die fighting. She snapped down, feeling the flesh on her tongue. Cerberus yelped in pain, not expecting one of the hounds to go that far. She could taste the blood enter her mouth as she penetrated deeper into his skin. The dog let out a howl, the pain something he was not antiquated to.
She let go, taking a few hops back before launching and attacking the back right leg, sinking her teeth far into it. The three headed dog lost his balance, stumbling and falling to its side. Bicker quickly let go, seizing the opportunity. She took off running down a tunnel. It didn't matter which one she just needed to get away. She knew her fellow Hellhounds would be soon after her, especially after taking down their gate keeper. She was okay with this.
She ran down the long tunnel. The bright lights flashing, the gravity changing. She was soon teleported to the human word. An unknown location to her, but a new start for her life. She knew she would always be on the run, but at least she could save some of humanity in the meantime.
