Something I've been working on but took a break from. I like it, but I can't seem to get the background behind his trunk just right. It's too flat and it bothers me. I've spent way too much time on it that I just got overwhelmed and had to work on other things. Maybe I'll come back to this, but in case I don't, here's the wip!

I love the look of the bark!
the layered detail is just really pleasing to the eye, because while theres a lot going on, it doesnt look cluttered and really fits with the style of the piece.
I can see what you mean with the background looking flat.
I think it looks really beautiful as a base background, but perhaps maybe add one more layer between the foreground and the background?
maybe a few more trunks with fuller leaves, just much less detailed and possibly blurred like you did with the one in front (I love that detail by the way!)

oh wow! This is turning out beautifully!! I actually don't mind the flat looking background. It doesn't scream for attention and keeps your eyes more towards the animals. :) This is wonderful so far Kium. Take a break from it then come back later. It'll give you a fresh eye.
