Borderlands 2: A Barren Curse (Fan Sub Story)
--- Chapter 1: A Cursed Life ---
“Pandora…A land where the barren of life lives in the most shallow of places, where the ruthless and the most badass inherits on the most dangerous terrains, where the most fowl and twisted prays on anyone, when they least expect it. I was forced to live that life, made to survive, to endure, to fight the many bandits, creatures and well known Badasses alike with nothing more than my persistence, experience, and duel Jacobs Revolvers to get in and out without a scratch. It happens a lot to someone when you lived in the worst of times, faced against the cruelest, and endured the worst torture ever known. As for me…Well…Where do I start?”
“It was many years ago, when was just much younger, I had a Father that I grew up with, after my mother passed away and died at the day of my birth. My father and I were made to live in Handsome Jack’s “Perfect” World in Opportunity, Saying it’s a place where we live in safety, in peace…So much for that. But it was also the day I approached a Vault in an excavation site and opened it without ever knowing it, and in its sanctum, powered by the Alien Element Eridium, not only affected my body and mind, but changed my life…forever.”
Night Falls on the Plains of The Dust as the gusting winds of the sands moves through the dunes and the homes, buried beneath. Bandit Vehicles and Buzzards roam the lands as the sky twinkles with stars above and the very moon, where the Hyperion Corporation rests for all to see, clear as day and shining bright. The hum of the engines echoes and the sound of the eerie breeze pass by as a small plume of smoke came up, from a handmade campfire. There lies a figure in a clothed robe rests under some scrap metal and broken parts left behind, looking to the fires and having a moment of thought. By his side was a double holster and on a Rag by him is two wheel barrel Jacobs revolvers with small texting on each. Together, they are named Smith and West as he came to mention the names from a well known ECHO Film he remembered watching, at a very young age. Remembering the two badass gunslingers, dueling at the Sandy Plains on Pandora and battled each other to know who mastered who in the end. The Figure could just ark back to the many times he used the ideas and the methods from his own childhood film and lived to be like them one day.
The Stranger looked back to the fires and felt the tough well made leather of something and looked to see, holding a Psycho mask he carried with, with its mouth piece torn, cut out, and reworked. Much of its lower part of the mask is taken out, bringing him back to the time when he confronted a Badass Psycho on the Icy Plains of Frostburn Canyon and managed to take him down, with his own hands and a shotgun slug to the mouth from a shotgun he ripped from a Norman Bandit he slain, as an act of desperation. He held on to it as a Trophy, reminding him that the years he spent on Pandora, Traveling and Fighting made him tough and capable. Putting the mask down, the figure still slumps back and relaxes by the fire, looking up to the skies as an unexpected Buzzard flies over him, giving him thought if he could be able to outlast Pandora, or that his luck will run out eventually to its savagery. He even imagined that he never blamed himself for living here to begin with, even the times with his father when he’s alive. “Sigh…You were to do whatever it takes to keep me safe” Said the Stranger, “ but I bet deep down inside that you would’ve think something better…Right?......Yeah…”
The Stranger stopped and looked over at a rugged backpack he carried with. He opened it up and pulled out an ECHO Device and activates it, displaying a small picture of him and his father and Mother. His father was at around his thirties as he has a Beard up, very short Brown Hair, wearing glasses with 20/20 Vision, all in casual clothing. Alongside him was a beautiful woman, with a long set of lovely hair that touches her shoulders, wearing casual clothing and has some black stains on her hands and a bit on her shirt. The Stranger remembered that her mother, told by his own father, that in her younger years, have been helping a weapon company work on Jacobs Firearms. From Shotguns, to Revolvers, and Sniper Rifles, She always tries out each one and always nailed a strong and powerful shot at the targeting range.
As the Stranger looks the picture still, his mind brings him back to when he was just 12 years old and often pretty alone. His Father has been moving a lot lately, experiencing such heavy infestations of Creatures and Bandits, making him troubled about his son’s safety. He was never easy to live life anywhere on Pandora without a massive holler from a swarm of bandits, or the cries of a Skags, or Ravenous Threshers from attacking their home or ambushing him. As his memories slowly come together, he glances to the day when he rests in a train car and his father sit by him, reviewing the contract he made the best he can. The son looks down at the floor and lap as he looks up to his father, and opens his mouth to speak.
“Dad?...Are you sure about moving here?...My Friends told me about this place and…I don’t know if-“
“Riley…Please stop worrying……sigh, I know that you’re unsure about this, But Mr. Jack offered me a job, a Home we can live in, and protection from these creatures…you’ll meet new friends here” His Father Responded to him
Riley Replied back, “But I enjoy my old friends, and my old home…that is what mom would’ve wanted” “Don’t…” *His Father stopped him, looking to him * “Your mother just wanted us to move on and be grateful that we have our lives to think about, so you better please respect that” Ripley looked about and looked with a disappointing face, “But Dad-“
“That’s Enough!” Said the Father, Interrupting him, The sudden barking attracted the attention of some Hyperion Solders, sitting in the same car as they are and looks away to talk back to each other. “Please…I don’t need any more complaining, this is our only chance we have to live our lives, and I’ll do anything for you and to make you happy and cherish those moments…ok?”
Riley rubs his hands together and looks to his father, with a frown on his face, and nods, replaying “Ok…I guess…” His father pat’s his shoulder and nods back, replaying back, “Thank you, I promise to make it last and I’ll be with you buddy, I’ll do whatever it takes.” He pat’s his son’s hands and looks at the files he’s holding, as Riley look out the window of the train car and pouts, discouraged about his father not taking second thoughts about his actions. A glimpse of The Hyperion City glistened in the distance as they slowly arrived to their location, Opportunity.
The train makes its turn at the tracks and slowly speeds down to the station and came to a halt at the Station Grounds. As soon as it stops, the voice from the ECHOcom came out with a female announcer speaking “Now arriving at Opportunity. Thank you loyal citizens on using the Hyperion Express Train. Please exit at your right as the Train makes a complete stop, and Remember, Jack is fighting for you! ~”
“Alright Son, Pack up and head on out~” The Father said to his son when he gathered his files and briefcase. Riley sighed and picked up his backpack with everything he had with: This ECHO Device, some pieces of Candy he has with the name “Cactus Bites” written on the wrapper, the kind that fizzle and pop in your mouth when its placed on your tongue, and picks up a picture of his mother in a younger age, before she passed on. He took a good glance to the aged picture as he frowns, wishing to meet her and to be hold by her in her arms when he’s just an infant. He let out a brief sigh as Riley carefully dusts it off and slips it into his pocket, unsure about the new lands he’s about to enter.
As he readies up, a voice came out from one of the soldiers “Come on Kid, We don’t have all day …Hurry up already…” Riley came out as he’s escorted with his father by the Hyperion Soldiers, out of the train in a single line and into the open, where giant Spires await before them in the city of Opportunity. Construction yards are around the city as preparations are planned to expand the city and grow, and many Engineers wonder about and works on the buildings and the Metal working. Then a set of footsteps came to Riley and his Father as they look over. Two soldiers walking down a few steps and in between of them are someone they meet before, a man in stylish clothing, wearing men’s Business, an expensive leather coat, with a hairstyle that he combs and gels to keeping it in place, and the one thing that Riley can’t forget is how he wears that mask over his face. Is that a mask of another person he wears? What is he hiding behind that mask? ...Riley is unsure about the answer, and not sure about whether or not to find out.
The man comes close to Riley's Father, as he looks to see before him, The President of the Hyperion Corporation, Handsome Jack. Jack walks down the way with his convincing smile as he always pulls and spoke, “Jimbooo…Very nice to meet you here, glad you made it on time to me, Handsome Jack…Aaaaand who’s this?” The way he said it as he’s mentioning Riley is the sound of an unclear idea about him. “Oh, Mr. Jack, This is my son, Riley” Riley's Father responded as Jack looked to his small young son and tries to pucker up a smile, “Well, Nice to meet you Kiddo. Welcome to Opportunity~” Riley looks to his clothing and then up to his mask and his eyes, as his father suspected Handsome Jack to have Heterochromia Iridium, having a Blue color on his Left eye, and a Green Color on the other. Riley gave a momentary look and finally spoke “Why do you smell like cheap Colone?” Jack paused for a moment and suddenly laughs out nicely. “Aaahahaha…Uhhh what a good kid you have, knowing ahead…Heheh…” Said Jack as he patted Riley's head a bit roughly and soon turns his head, holding his whitened teeth together and grumbled softly “Uhhhhhh…little shit…”
He soon turns back to them in his pleasant tone, clapping his hands together and spoke again, “So Jimmy…Got those files we talked about before? ~” Riley’s Father replied, holding up the briefcase, “Yes I do sir, all here, organized and ready.” Jack clapped his hands once again and responded, “Heeey, that’s just great Jimmy…You know, we could work like partners on the excavation site I-…I mean…”we” discovered. I bet that you’re ready to work on this as soon as we could…” Riley's Father looks over to his son and back, replying back, “I bet we would, but it’s been an exhausting trip and such, maybe tomorrow?” Jack stops to look and replayed back in a calm tone, “Well fine then, I’ll get you and…your little darling kid that I’m hoping nothing bad happens to him…will have a space you two can relax in and we can continue this in the morning.”
Riley's Father Nods, walking with him as Riley follows along behind him, “Sure thing sir, which sounds good there. Are we covered by all this, Mr. Jack?” *Handsome Jack looks in fount of him as he rolls his eyes and turns to him, saying with his pleasant tone once more, “Jimbooo, Of course it’s all covered...I mean, If wasn’t a Trillionare, where would you be right now if I didn’t responded to your request? In the stomach, being slowly digested? HAHA…uuuhhhhhh” Jack stopped for a bit, as he faked that laughter, “…But, definitely not-Look Jim, I’ll take care of everything here, and make sure that your needs are fulfilled here in Opportunity.~ Your rooms are set up in Apt J50, No get on up there and have a good time~” *Jack chuckled once more as Riley and his father walks up to the building doors and headed inside.
He turns around from the building as the tone of his voice goes down and sighed annoyingly as his secretary comes on by. “Uhhhhh…I…Hate-being so damn nice…” Jack said, with a distasteful grin on his face. Then his secretary and assistant, Stacy replied back to him, “This is for the excavation site you been hunting for a while now, and Mister Winchester has what you need for the company” “I know…Maybe this my turn out better as long as nothing happens in those chambers. If this whole thing goes wrong, then I like for you to make up a reminder on killing the annoying, babbling moron” Jack replayed back to Stacy. His assistant looked back to him again and questioned him, “And what about his kid?” Jack looks to her, “Even that little bratty piece of garbage, I just like to see his little face when I crush Mr. Winchester’s head with my bear hands…got that?” Stacy looks and writes it down on her clipboard and Replied, “Yes sir, I’ll prepare everything when it goes downhill from here.”
“Good Stacy, you may go now and feel free to call me handsome Jack if that’s not too much of a task here, alright?...Thanks pumpkin…Were done here~” Said Jack as he looks over to the Horizon and Stacy heads off to make up the preparations in her office. Jack looked as a small smile grew on his face and spoke to himself, “Finally…It took me a while, but I finally found what I hoped to look forward to, An Alien Power that will allow me to wipe out these bandits clean off this world and rule it. Nothing will get in my way ever again. Not those bandits, or those Vault Hunters, nor the Crimson Raiders…anyone that will challenge me…I’ll master Eridium and the powers that will be waiting for me to seize it…” The day slowly drifts away as Jack prepares for the day of the excavation tomorrow, and what awaits for him. But also marks where it goes downhill, for Riley, and the events that await him, when he discovered the vault, that will chart a very rough and troubling course for him, Unknowing what is…to come.
