Once an Acolyte of the Golden Tower, a hig ranking member of the Golden Sun religion, presided over my a mighty golden dragon hailed as a living god.
The Monk, as his name has been forgotten, was banished from the tower and stripped of his rank when he questioned how the dragon could sit by while the kingdom fell into ruin.
He dove into dark magic and forbidden tomes, experimenting on criminals and bandits. For this he was declared an outright heretic, and driven out of the kingdom entirely.
He returned just before the curse took hold, bringing with him bezzare and occult powers, he cast down the dragon god, and embraced the various sub-cults, weaving them into a single overly complicated, multi-pantheonistic and secretive faith with him in the highest earthly authority.
He is the richest man/being in Blackmyst, the hollow and soulless turn to The Golden Tower to give their empty passionless lives meaning. His body, unlike others, ages and withers, so every seventy years he must find a new vessel. They believe they are being groomed to become his successor, and to outsiders it appears that that a new monk is crowned. But it is the same soul, inhabiting various empty bodies.
A large town known as the squalid burg has sprung up around the base of his golden tower. within it the monk's will is law, and his enforcers walk the streets with impunity.
He is driven to find a solution to blackmyst's curse, regardless of how many hollowed people he must sacrifice, or how much blood he must spill for his horrific experiments. His only competition is the Maiden of Song who lusts for his power and wealth. Her Draoi and his Vates wage a constant struggle across the hinterlands as he protects his corrupt faith from her corrupt faith.
Done for me by toughest.
