The Butcher Cometh: Act 6
Jack was amazed by Clevenger’s quickness. Even after the injuries he sustained, he was still too fast for Jack to handle. No, wait, Clevenger wasn’t speeding up. Jack was slowing down. The wound on his chest was severe and his ability to stand could only be done through utter willpower. His body was falling apart and he couldn’t take anymore exertion. If he stood still, he’d die. If he kept going, he’d die. Jack was just put in a lose-lose situation and all Trixie could do was watch.
Clevenger swung his chopper with greater force and speed every time, insanely grinning and chuckling all the while. Jack dodged his attacks awkwardly and each time barely making it by the skin of his teeth. After several cleaving attempts, Clevenger began to lose feeling in his arm. Instead of swinging the blade, he hurled it at Black Jack. Jack barely evaded the projectile as it hacked into a boulder. He glanced at Clevenger’s blade, now embedded into the rock. Was Clevenger becoming stronger now too or was he that powerful to begin with? He didn’t have time to really think about the matter. Clevenger’s sudden loss of his weapon didn’t slow him down at all. He unleashed a mad flurry of punches at Black Jack and in a brief moment, Jack lost his footing. Clevenger took the opportunity, and brutally pummeled his opponent. A hail of fists struck Jack in his face and stomach. Clevenger took great enjoyment in thrashing Jack, so much so that he was unaware that with each punch he threw, the two men were getting closer and closer to the cliff’s edge. Jack however was well aware of this fact; such was the case when he tried to step back and noticed nothing there.
Small bits of rock tumbled down the cliff’s face. Jack glanced down and saw the roaring ocean beneath him. He quickly looked back and saw Clevenger’s fist rocketing towards his head. With all the strength he had left, he smashed Clevenger’s fist away and struck his wicked countenance. He then thumped Clevenger in his badly wounded stomach. Clevenger hunched forward slightly and winced from the pain. Jack wrapped his arms around Clevenger’s abdomen and with Clevenger successfully grappled; Jack leaned backward with all of his weight. The two combatants fell off the cliff and then disappeared from sight.
“NOOOOOOO!!!” screeched Trixie as she saw Jack and Clevenger fall off Roaric’s Cliff. Tito and Travus continued to hold her back but Tyler suddenly burst into action. He ran toward the cliff’s edge as fast as he possibly could, and then jumped off as if he could fly. Trixie and the two men wrestling her stood in shock. Tyler had just hurled himself off a cliff. They were stunned by how quickly Tyler decided to end his life but then they noticed something. There was a serpentine object rapidly slithering across the rocky soil. It was rope! And one of the ends of that rope was tied to a large rock. In a split second, the rope stopped moving and became taut. The three rushed to the edge of the cliff and saw Tyler clutching Black Jack in his arms. He had wrapped one end of the rope around himself and the other to the rock. How or when he did this was uncertain. Perhaps it occurred when Black Jack stabbed Clevenger and took his cleaver away from him; or when Jack tried to dodge Clevenger’s storm of punches. In any case, it didn’t really matter. Black Jack was alive; he was unconscious, but still alive. “HEY.” bellowed Tyler calmly “PULL US UP ALREADY. I DON’T THINK I CAN HOLD HIM MUCH LONGER.” The three snapped out of their shock-induced stupor. “You heard him!” barked Trixie “Pull them up!”
Black Jack rolled open his eyes wearily. Or rather eye, as it were. His right orb had been swollen shut due to horrible bruising. Apparently now he had a reason to actually wear his eye patch. For as long as he could remember, he wore it just to look dashing. Anyway, Jack examined his surroundings without moving his head. He was in a room of some kind; with wooden planks all around the walls and floor. He saw shelves of medicine and herbs lining the walls. He laid on a clean, soft bed with three other beds just like it lined in a row. Jack knew where he was now. He was in the sickbay of the Lucky Fox. He was back on the ship.
“I see you’re awake now.” said a sweet voice. He looked for the source of such a heavenly accent and saw Angela sitting on the side of his bed. She smiled gently at him. “How are you feeling?” “Good knowing I’m not dead.” replied Jack faintly “What happened anyway?” “You got very badly wounded.” answered Angela “It was so bad in fact, that for the past three days I wasn’t sure if you’d actually pull through.” Jack looked confused “I was out for three days?” “That’s right.” responded Angela. Jack tried to get up but couldn’t. He looked down at himself and saw the bandages that covered his torso. He also realized that his body was too damaged to move very well. “Do you want to sit up for a while?” asked Angela politely. “Uh…yes please.” responded Jack sheepishly. Angela stood up from her seat and towered over him. He forgot how tall she was. She gently put her hands under his arms and then lifted him up. She placed him back down softly in front of the headboard, allowing him to prop up against the wall. “Thanks.” said Jack. “Your welcome.” replied Angela warmly. “Where’s Trixie?” Jack asked worriedly. Angela sincerely smiled and pointed to the other side of his bed. Jack slowly turned his head to where her digit directed and spotted Trixie slouched on a barrel facing him. She was sleeping with tears encrusted on her cheeks. Her hair was frayed and her hands cradled the sides of her belly. Her protruding abdomen was pressed up against the bed and had a barrel underneath it for support. Angela spoke “The whole time you were out, she was sitting right there beside you. I guess she was afraid of losing you, like how she lost Edison.” There was a momentary silence as Jack gazed at his wife. Without taking his eyes off Trixie he asked “Can you leave us alone for a while?” She looked at Trixie for a moment, smiled, and replied “Of course. If you need anything, just call me.” Angela departed the room, knowing that it would be best to leave them alone for the moment.
After Angela gently closed the door behind her, Jack continued to anxiously watch Trixie. She looked horrible but still amazingly beautiful. With quite a bit of effort, he nudged his body closer to her. He took his hand and outstretched it to Trixie’s stomach. He felt and caressed the protrusion; warmth was radiating from her children; his children. He then placed his hand on her cheek. He massaged his thumb against it while lightly touching her hair. Trixie softly moaned and reflexively nuzzled his hand. Her back arched, causing her belly to push further into the bed’s side. A faint smile appeared on her lips; she unconsciously knew that it was Jack caressing her face. A weak smirk formed on Jack’s visage. He was elated by one simple fact; or two actually. Trixie was safe; and he was alive. He thanked the powers that be for sparing him and his love. He then gently slid his hand away from Trixie and leaned his head against the wall. Within moments, he was asleep. The two could now rest, and dream sweet dreams.
