So. I watched OMFGNinja's guide to playing a Spy... and I gotta say, the fault of the guide is he forgot to mention that most players will expel their ENTIRE SUPPLY OF AMMO before they get to the frontlines!
Rather then play the spy, sometimes I find it more entertaining when things are dull, to play a normal class and then pretend to be a spy. Suspiciously running from my own team and stuff XD (it's fun AND pretty good practice for avoiding people without the usual downsides of being discovered XD

Mmm, I assume you mean spy disguised as a enemy spy? It's a disguise that rarely works, since spies rarely go undisguised for longer periods of time... and a spy without a mask is suspcious.
It's funny though, scout is one of the better disguises. While you can't double-jump, or is as fast as a real scout it still manages to fool most people.

No, I mean "Anyone who is obviously a spy"
Like a pyro or a scout (Not a spy dressed as one) can often get through the enemy teams heavy hitters easier than a spy in a disguise because it seems like people assume someone will blow up the scout or pyro but people will drop everything to kill a spy. x3
I don't know, that's my experience anyway. It could also be noted that i'm a terrible spy but a pretty good scout or pyro.

That people drop everything to hunt spies is something I use to my advantage. It\'s something really amusing when the whole enemy team detected me after a quick backstab of mine, then wastes lots of time with spychecking. :P It\'s partly psychological, since people seem to really hate being backstabbed by a spy.
And a friendly scout/pyro running in the wrong direction is always suspicious so i\'m not really surprised. Ironically, this means that sometimes disguising as your own team initially is a good idea, since you can melt into your own team and run to the frontline... then cloak to get behind it.
Then spy is my most played class, and most people seem to agree it\'s probably one of the most tricky to learn and master.

Yes, because a spy is one of two classes that can kill you with a single motion. The sniper being the other. YOu cna't do a thing about him, but the spy you can. Be paranoid, be aggressive when you discover one. Don't give them a second chance at your neck-fat.
The biggest Telltale of a spy is the fact they're at half health (always), and then they run past a healthpack. Pluss they always have the main weapon out. A good spy can be a sniper on a sniping map.
Funny thing is most people try adn run past using the disguise. Use the cloak to get to a hiding spot, let the cloak regen, get to the farthest point back. Then choose your disguise and play the part. If your a pyro run around "hunting" spies. If your a heavy spam the medic button. (lol) If your a scout you best be telling the engy you need a teleporter. Honestly a spy is a one shot deal, you are like a sniper, but on the other side of that pesky wall. Stab the target and try like hell to get out of there. If your lucky you cna make it to your base and pop someone that dones't see you or maybe even does with the revolver. (Uber pistol BTW)

Keep in mind FPS gamers tend to be very selfish sorts and which is more likely to kill a heavy personally, a scout or a spy? (Pyros are somewhat likely to nowadays thanks to the rediculously overpowered backburner, but what's more fun than being a total flamer and sneaking up on people from behind?).
Backburner? Overpowered?
Is that a joke? It's not a very good one.
No blowback and the fact that the weapon no longer gives a health boost or even a speed boost to attone for such a nerf makes it an utter shit weapon unless you're playing against clueless pubbies who bought the game yesterday.
I guess you prolly think the crit healgun and the flare gun are pretty good weapons, too.

It really depends on the level, area of frontline and etc. It can be said, that if there is no real frontline to get behind (such as the second point on the first round of dustbowl), playing spy is much harder. And even as a career spy that is infamous on some of the furry servers I play on (I would probably be the top spy on a certain server, if I didn't decide to play on a whole another server lately), there is moments it's just worthwhile to go another class than spy. Some levels have alot of spam, while others have none at all. cp_dustbowl is specifically wellknown for it's spam. Getting past the first point of the third round is probably the trickiest frontline in the game to get behind, but it's usually rewarding when you manage to pull it off (I pissed off the enemy team so many times by instantly spycapping the last point after my team captured the first point :)).
As for pyros... I rarely find them a problem. I can outrange and kill them with my revolver, and if the pyros are really excessively spychecking... I just abuse the fact that the enemy team is not balanced in terms of classes, go soldier and start killing them (despite the addition of airblast, soldiers are still excellent for taking down pyros).
I been considering to make a spy guide of my own, mostly complementing minor but good to know things that most other guides miss. I also been considering with a few friends to start tutoring people about how to play the various classes ingame.
Sorry for the long post, but it's after all about the class I play the most (and too much).

Those who cant spy, spyro. Unless i go to a completely newb server, im spotted almost instantly, no matter what tactics i use. Unless the map is great for a spy, playing one is almost pointless. And with the addition of some of the pyros abilities, theyve become the real ambushers.
Spy is an opportunist class. You really cant play it to win, you just got to survive until that good situation arises.
Personally, i just like playing a pyro, i still get the drop on the enemy a lot, plus having the survivability.
Hehe nice little comic though. ^^

I play Pyro, but I'm not a mindless idiot with it. I play a pyro like a spy (which makes it even more literal when you take into account my 'pretending to be enemy' exercise.
Like the second phase two of GoldRush starts- I wait for the heavy classes to clear the tunnel. Then I make a Blitzkrieg rush past the main combat - take out their snipers, and usually at this time the respawns from red will be coming out the tunnel.
And to just get it out there - my stance on the 50hp on pyro: Yes, alot of people were using it as a crutch, but being a low hp close range class tends to have problems against Soldiers, Scouts, Heavies that look at you for a second when you're circle strafing etc.
Also if I'm supposed to be an ambush class- why is my gun so OldSnake'n HUGE!??! (and there's a glitch with backburner that, while it is 5 inches longer than the original, it CURVES away from enemies!! LOL

I'm not sure which I like better- The backburner's 100% crit rate sounds nice, but then again there's a definite charm to reflecting a Soldier's Crit Missle back into his face.
Of course, that air blast seems to chew through ammo at an obscene rate. And I don't have the backburner yet ANYWAY. I should get working on that...
I am excited about the Medic's health-draining needle gun though. That looks fun.

The airblast really helps out if you're trying to assist an engineer in keeping his machinery alive... Blowing stickies out of the way, deflecting rockets (or just catching them) so they don't hit the dispenser.
Not to mention when red team has the habit of hiding on top of that little hut by the main blue exit on dustbowl... One well aimed airblast and you can send half the team into the chasm by the middle exit, only to have to trudge back up with their uber charge wearing off.
The blutsauger is very very worth getting, most never look back to the needlegun after getting it. I can highly recommend it.

30? I thought they brought the medic unlocks down to match the pyro ones at 22...
I decided that most of the medic ones were impossible in regular gaming, though, and just farmed 'em... Annoy fewer players that way by trying to do strange things that aren't always helpful towards the goal.
Try and make friends with someone willing to help too, a buddy who'll play heavy and -not- get both of you killed is essential for big-pharma for example.
But meh, I'll quit being obvious, if you're europe based, give me a shout if you get stuck, I'm not great at the game, but always willing to help :)

Haha true true, hiding around corners is practically impossible with that super long flamethrower poking out. Im glad they removed that HP bonus from the back burner. Some people were taking full advantage of that for frontal assaults.
There is nothing better than going behind enemy lines, entering a hallway, and finding the entire enemy team with their back turned to you. Even if they turn and kill you before you kill them, youll probly set all of them on fire and they will be fighting over the medic and health packs.

Well, a common mistake newbie spies does is assuming that people are fooled by the disguise. So you should generally avoid being seen at all. Only assume that disguises fool people when they're really busy with something else.
You need some timing with the backstabs/cloaking, and also know when to just use your revolver Some of the weaker classes dies quickly when you shoot at them with the revolver. Great for killing those snipers that are out of reach for a backstab, but still relatively close.
Yes the spy is bit of a opportunist. But I must say that in my experience, the opportunities happens often. :P
It's not impossible to fool experienced players. It's alot harder of course then, but I still find being a spy a worthwhile activity... as long you do it right. :P

Well, it is the 2nd most accurate weapon in the whole game... and each shot is rather powerful at close range. The damage is lower over higher distances, but it\'s still high enough to kill at long distances (of course, this attracts attention of real snipers... that own you pretty quickly). I abused this once in sudden death on tc_hydro, by sneaking into one of the sniper balconies then sniped the engineer camping at the point.
I love how engineer buildings get destroyed in sudden death when their owner dies... makes my life easier. :)

"Are you afraid that you'll let the other team know that you are a spy? Big deal. Rule #1: Disguises are worthless for fooling people. They are just for sentry cover and 1 second protection (if you are disguised an friendly engie, others will be less tempted to shoot you over the nasty scout/soldier/demo shooting at them)." ~ Forlorn

Since I'm only a "decent" sniper, I rarely find myself in a favorable position sniper duels with some of the career snipers I meet.
However I also know in my experience that the last thing enemy snipers excepts in a sniper duel, is a enemy sniper coming out of nowhere with their Kukri and bash them to death. :
(Of course, a spy is more efficient for that task... but it's good for embarrassing a rather annoying opponent. And sneaking skills helps. ;P)

Spy involves a lot of luck, period. Most other classes have some way to get out of trouble if they get spotted or bumped into (Scout has speed, Soldier has MAGGOTS, etc.).
Spy? If you're lucky, you'll kill the person who spotted you with your revolver. If you're REALLY lucky no one will see it and gib you.
But it's all worth it for those moments where you backstab half of the other team as they try to capture a point.

Tip #1 for playing Spy: You're gonna die. Alot. Get over it.
Tip #2: Always try to find the route your team isn't taking and use that. Usually the defense is concentrating on the people they can see. So find the route not being watched and sneak through there. You have a cloaking device for a reason.
Tip #3: Pyros die in about 4 shots from your gun. Use this knowledge to pick them off from a distance so you don't get firehosed.
Tip #4: After every kill, cloak and run. It'll save your ass more than just running.
Tip #5: When all else fails, flip out and kill people.
Tip #6: Remember that Engys can be hurt by their own SGs. Use this knowledge to turn their guns on them to remove them, then cloak, disguise, and sap.
Tip #7: Nothing disrupts defense like mass sapping. Especially when your team just hit with a major offensive.
Tip #8: It helps if you've played all the other classes. If you know how someone's supposed to play,it makes it easier to disguise yourself as one of them. I find Engys are the best disguise because there's usually a lot of them and everyone expects them to be near the SGs.
Tip #9: Be a whisper in the wind,a shadow's shadow. Also, ninjas are cool.

I won't force any tips on you here, but I will point you to what I looked at a while back regarding Spy play. I found some of the tips helpful.

Ah, you can tell that video was made during the early days of TF2, not a single sentry on the roof, and a punch of people piled on top without looking behind them. I kinda miss those days ^^ The game isnt quite so much fun when everyone does the same strategies and sentry placements over and over each map now
I'm not really sure what my fav class is. When I'm a sniper, I do get good kills, but I feel just like every other sniper, camping on some high point shooting at the clusterfuck of battle below. I do pretty well with the pyro and soldier though. I prefer sneaking up behind people though, and flaming the hell out of them, or just beating them with the soldier's shovel.

Mine are Sniper, spy and demo in that order. I like sniper, because I have a knack at finding places that are different to shoot from, those unusual angles and such they dont expect a sniper to be at and finishing them off. (granted its kinda annoying to get 100 copycats the next couple rounds on the map when I find a good one, and then all the OTHER snipers try and camp that spot too) But I take pride in having a twitchy finger, and nothing is quite so satisfying to me as headshoting a demo mid-explosives jump and watching his ragdoll tumble through the air and land on a rock or somthing. Or coming out on top in a sniper duel
It sucks when youre cloaked in a tunnel and you just bump into the enemy, and they'll be "why cant I move more? maybe ill shoot this invisible barrier" then you see a burning silhouette running around and dying. >w<;
a way to tell a pyro is a spy is that they stay on fire longer.

Some classes don't require much finesse- (I'm lookin at you Medic and Heavy!)- Then there's the spy.
I'm just an outright awful spy, even though I'd love to be one. I'm but I'm a pretty good Demo I think. (I once rigged the intel room with explosives and set them off just as an enemy picked up our intel. XD )
I just usually end up playing Medic anyway since few other people do. =P

Erk... I hear you on the difficulty of sneaking behind enemy lines...
About the kindest thing I can manage to do for our team's spies is to draw the enemy fire away... When playing as a spy, the only thing more infuriating than a twitchy pyro is a team mate that tries to use you as a human shield...
Well, maybe a medic who heals you as you cloak and run out in front of the snipers...

I hate spies, I have less than 1 hour of play time as a spy out of the like 120 hours of play time in the last month. I'm a good spy hunter with any class though, because it's simple, you just shoot everyone three or four times or as my usual demoman just launch a pipebomb at their face. Works every time...
In all about 6% of my deaths are from spies, so I'm pretty effective.

There's nothing more fun than disguising as a class, making it to their flag, and uncloaking before venturing in. Crouch by the dispenser, and act like you're looking around. If the engy runs off? SAP, GRAB, AND RUN LIKE HELL!! Because you're going to have the entire team after you for making it past them. XD
And as a heavy player, I can attest to the power of spies. I tend to find some of the lest experienced ones, but the cloaked ones always get me. Though it's hilarious to see a spy go toe to toe with a heavies fists. Punch Puch, splat. XD

FEH! this is my point exactly :U I was great at spy until the whole Pyro achievements thing. all of a sudden massive wad of fire spamming people kind of deters me from playing to long (that and terrible lag which I can only avoid off of the furry servers for some accursed reason ;-; )
that aside, the only problem for me sneaking into the frontline is that more often than not there is no frontline but rather random people, paranoid free-for-all people, running around blindly and finding me before I have a chance to cloak or right before I completely cloak which really gets to me >8U!!!!!
I'd love to play a friendly fire server ONE TIME. Spies would rule and there wouldn't be that slimey explosive projectile spamming and the like.

Its pretty fun, though to be honest I'm getting rather frustrated with all the weapon unlocks and stuff. The new weapons and stuff are changing the game a great deal (both in how each class is played and in overall strategy), and I'm not convinced for the better in some areas...
Ive noticed that a lot too, (I pretty much constantly play Spy, sniper, or demo) And people keep saying spy class is either all luck or just impossible. There is a real knack needed to playing spy, but it only works on some levels. (second part of dustbowl is next to impossible if the teams decide to go sentry heavy) but in nice open spaced levels with places you get around, behind, or full of good hiding spots for ambushes the spies can do a lot of damage in skilled hands. It just takes a LOT of patience and some luck to pull it off well. People who charge in and try and attack the first thing they come across or charge into a group of people, (many noob spies do this without hesitation) will die in about 1/2 a second.
There are a few other strategies for spies that work well also, a teammate on my server only goes after equipment and engineers. Its harder to detect a spy who avoids the obvious targets like heavys and medics, and does a good job at depriving the team of buildings so we can push easily. (I normally thought this strategy wouldnt been too effective, but I am often surprised at how little the enemy puts to defense when 1 spy is repeatedly destroying everything they make.)
Another one I know pretty mcuh only goes after lone targets in maps that are too dense with enemy units. He'll camp around the areas between the front line and the respawn and take out single or paies of people who are on theyre way to the front lines and have no backup to help them out. (The effectiveness of this strategy is arguable, considering how long and difficult it is to sneak past the front line in the first place, and the fact that enemies tend to spawn in waves)

You might wanna try one of my servers (Fatgamer.net Epsilon, foxtrot and Indigo servers) Gami, The regulars are top notch players and work pretty well as far as teamwork and giving orders goes. They warn about ubers and spies, medics actually coordinate when to blow theyre ubers, and they try to keep a balanced group of classes when playing.
I use Scout/Pyro/Engineer depending on the situation of my team. Every team needs MINIMAL one sentry otherwise you're sitting ducks for a scout raid. If there is already two engineers, then I go pyro. Pyro's really are the best way to eliminate spies. Just make sure to touch everyone on your team when you see them with a lil poop of flame. They start burning, then go all out. I have special hiding places which optimize my burn down of enemy spies.
If the opposing defence is weak, then I go scout. No need to be defensive with a total lack of sentrys on the other side. I usually make this desision after spectating before the match. You can kinda get a look at the other team and see who has sentries and where they are.
As for your idea, Neko, It's a no go for me. I'm really into being ONLY BLUE. I've NEVER been red ever. Not worth the spying. I just go with spectating before joining.
HEY, Neko, are you on XBLive or PSN? If PSN, what's your username? I'd love to do some TF2 vs. with ya. :3

My favourite strategy: Play sniper on Dustbowl for a while, and really piss some people off. After you've killed the same people about four times without them touching you, you can bet one of them is going to go spy to kill you. So what I do? Duck into the resupply, change class to spy, and disguise as one of our own team's snipers. :P Pretend to be sniping, but when the spy comes to stab me, I stab HIM.
It's worked once. :P
It's worked once. :P
I'm not too bad as a Spy myself. I normally try to be a Medic. *shrug*
CTF: Scout, no doubt. I'm a flag-runner if anything else.
FFA: I'd rather just go for Medic. I'm not a good aim to begin with, so I'm better off a Healer.
Defend The Fort or whatever: Engineer. I'd rather kick ass then fail as anything else.
It's occasional I use a Spy. Not frequent, but here and there. <_<

Scout with Soda Popper, Mad Milk, and Boston Basher. I do it because I'm no good at staying alive anyway, so I might as well douse the enemy and do crits with the Basher while I'm still running. :P
Not the most effective use of the Scout, but better than how I normally play, which is "run in and get killed by sentry guns"
