I recently got interested in E-Ink displays and quickly wondered if anyone would be interested in con badges made with such displays.
For those unfamiliar with Kindles and other e-book readers, these displays are made to have extremely good visibility in day or artificial light, are monochromatic, and most importantly bi-stable. That means they can keep a picture displayed while consuming zero power.
I still have to correctly estimate the price of such a badge along with its specs list, and maybe declinations with more or less features to accomodate various budgets.
The basic principle would be to use an SD card or a USB connection to upload one or multiple pictures in memory, and have them displayed alternatively or, for example, by a button press to get your contact infos for X seconds before going back to your fursona picture.
To make it short:
Do any of my watchers would be interested in such a device, and if so, how much money should go into it ?

Wow this is a great idea and I would totally want one. My budget for it would be like $60 (without including artwork which I would provide) but for the badge itself yeah def!!
When do you think you can put these in production, id love one for confuzzled 2015! one for me and
as he needs more badges for sure too x

Great, thanks for the feedback !
I'll try to get the exact fab cost tonight, but it sure won't exceed $60.
From today, I need a month to make a proto and the final design, then probably an additionnal month to start making some usable ones. So that's way in time for CFZ.
I'll keep you updated with the price and specs :)

But I still haven't ordered the new, bigger molds :X
I only have the first try which has the ring unfilled, and the second one which looks alright but is quite firm and way too small.
Not sure I'll be able to put enough money aside to get the new version done before the badges :(

Units per day are their production capability, MOQ is the minimum order. Most of the companies I ordered from are okay to send 5~10 samples for electronic components. And if they refuse your order, you still have Aliexpress which is more like the Chinese eBay (never had any problems with it) :)
I would love to have one of these! I didn't even know the DIY scene had E-ink displays available to be bought.
It'd be even more spectacular if you could integrate a simple eeprom or something so that it switches between two images with a button press, but I don't know how much more complexity that'd add on top of just having one, and what kind of price increase that'd cause...

Online Chinese marketplaces have almost everything you want ;)
I was in fact planning of using a picture buffer with space for 2 or more fullscreen pictures, so that they can switch automatically after some delay (maybe too battery consuming ?), or by a button or fursuit-friendly touch pad so you can add IM addresses, URLs, QR codes or hidden naughty stuff and still have the regular fursona+name picture displayed most of the time.
Hope the slow nature of the display won't be too bothering, I've seen refresh times going over 5 seconds for some :/

The slow refresh time doesn't bug me on my Kindle Touch even when rapidly cycling through pictures. It'd be a really handy way to have a badge and your refs all in one unit without having to look after a binder of smut or whatever.
...If you integrated a cheap USB stick into it you could also just hook it up to any artist's computer at a convention or whatever(I've never been to one but I gather lots of people bring their laptops) and copy them over as well(QR codes could accomplish this too but they're kind of falling out of favor lately for some reason, and not everyone has a device that can read QR codes). Even companies that give out free USB sticks this day don't bother with anything less than 1GB, so I imagine there must be a ridiculously cheap source for them, probably in the same place where you pick up your displays.

Thanks also for your comment :)
It seems people agree that $60 should be a good reference, and very happy to see that noone was expecting it to be the avergage price of a regular paper badge :p
I'm designing it so it can be easily and quickly assembled. Basically it'll require soldering around 20 tiny components, connect the display, screw and glue the frame around everything and pray for it to work. Nothing very tiring or hard, especially knowing I won't be making 10's of these...

Those displays are still quite expensive yes, but I should be able to get a deal for $25 a piece.
I'll have to add up the price of the acrylic frame and the other electronic components (which are all under $5), and see how much time I need to assemble one. I'll do everything I can to keep the price under $60 for a basic version, even if I end up pulling off $10 for labor & research.
Very pleased to see that people have consideration for this, even though it mostly brings geek cred rather than artistic possibilities.

Wow, $25 lol. I remember not too long ago those Sony e-readers or whatever were like, $300.
But yeah, I'd actually really love to buy one of these if this all happens! Plus I wouldn't worry about it being too geeky or anything if its made for furry purposes x3. I agree on the limitations of what really could be done with it outside the working components themselves, though. I suppose a sleek, sturdy case would be more than awesome. The whole display thing is good enough in itself imo!
What kind of battery would be going into these? Not that one would exactly want to play movies or anything on this though
