Here's the completed page roughs! Hopefully the beginning makes a little more sense, some parts have been adjusted in page 1-3 due to feedback. The story may seem a little confusing, but I'm leaving it up to interpretation and hope everyone gets something slightly different from the meaning of the requirements given to him, why they were given, etc. This will be inked and colored by the completion of this course, and will be posted here as well.
Enjoy!

it starts out with 2 kids having fun in the snow...one goes out on some ice...and the ice cracks beneath her, she drowns...the remaining kid is devastated and mourns her for several weeks until a raven in a cloak meets him and offers him a deal...to continue on with his life and then someday, he'll be able to see her again
he cheers up thanking the stranger and goes off....fishing, hunting, living his life....he gets older, stronger, wiser, settles down...has a family
eventually he's old...and very very sick...his time is almost up and wishes he could see his friend again but he knows it won't happen....and then the raven from before shows up in his room...at that point, he sighs, closes his eyes and breathes his last breath before opening them back up and seeing the raven still standing there...the raven pulls back the cloak and reveals that its his friend from so long ago....and that they're back to their youthful selves and able to spend all the time in the world together in their afterlife
at least that's how I see it

This is actually really close! The "friend" is his sister (I'll probably name the title of the comic so that this isn't confusing), and after dying she appeared to him as a manifestation of a shaman, giving him objectives to motivate him with the promise of being reunited with the sister. She actually based those cards on specific things he had said (as a child) he really wanted to do within his lifetime. Catch an enormous fish, hunt a deadly cougar, build a home and raise a family, write a novel. She wanted him to do all of those things rather than dwell on her death which wasn't his fault.
That actually does clear it up a lot.
To be honest the ending was a bit soured. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the comic and it definitely was touching. It's just the thought that it was probably an old love/crush or childhood friend made me not like the ending as much as I wanted. I was just sitting there going, "really dude? You want to spend eternity with an old crush instead of your loving wife?" But like I said, the knowledge of it being his sister makes it better.
Again, I really enjoyed it over all. Great work. Keep it up.

I actually thought that it was it first love too. The shaman would give him this cards to calm him down since he's been mourning for so long. The cards are like the best life time events he would have had with her. But: In the end everybody has to die so he'll see her then again for sure.
Maybe to better convey that she's his sister, in the picture of them, have them do something that siblings would be more likely to do.
Like, they could be making faces at the camera, or his sister could be on his back and pointing forward for him to run, or something like that. I think that would clear it up. nwn
The current posing seems more romantic than familial; I hold my boyfriend's hands like that when I talk to him and try to give him kisses.

To be with the girl you cherish you have to follow what the cards depict.
Seeing the hooded raven, catching a fish for the first time and so on until all cards fade. But as the cards fade so the years in his life. As he die he met the girl... in heaven and the last card fade...
Well that was my interpretation!

Kind of bitter-sweet. It looks like he found love and lived a full life, only to have his childhood wish fulfilled and to be young with his friend again. Though I'd probably do the same thing, I know a lot of other people might not.
Well done comic. I like how so much is portrayed without the use of text.

once upon a time there was a boy and his sister, his sister falls through a frozen lake and drowns, her morns her for a long time.
a mystical being (a shaman) appears gives the boy a way to be united with his sister by completing tasks (cards), every time he completes a task a card would disappear.
so he embarks on a quest to complete them including killing the beast, finding his love, starting a family, and writing down his life story.
on his death bed he feels betrayed because he completed all the tasks.
and when passes on it turns out that the shaman was non other than his sister who wanted him to live his life to the max, and he got his wish of reuniting with his sister.

Hey Zaush,
Thanks for making this. My girlfriend died about a month back. Its hard for me to keep moving sometimes. I know art is all about connecting and what you feel and interpret about it. and this is connecting really strongly and pulling on some heartstrings that needed to be pulled. But yeah... thanks again for a little bit of peace

This was an immensely beautiful thing to see in my submissions today. I enjoyed the challenge of piecing it all together through roughs and no dialogue, and when I finally got it, I cried.
Thank you for taking the time for this piece, it definitely touched me, and apparently others, in a very profound way.

Dude, this is absolutely beautiful!
I haven't read anything that made me tear up like that since... ever.
The storytelling in this is just fantastic, and I'm impressed how much you're able to say in just those few pages.
Every time I read through it, I have to choke back tears...
Seriously, I think you should do more short stories like this.
