Mason balled up his fists and darted forward, aiming a low towards his father's stomach. Leroy blocked the attack easily. The older bat stepped back and grabbed his son's arm, using the boy's momentum to flip him to the ground. mason grunted. He rolled quickly and scrambled to his feet, coming in low at his father's legs. Leroy side-stepped, allowing Mason to stumble by.
"Don't rush, Mason," Leroy said. "That's when you make mistakes."
The young echidna looked at his father.
"But, Dad. That's what all the older boys do."
"So why do you need to copy them?"
Leroy smiled as Mason attacked again. He watched as the boy jumped and suddenly spread his wings. Mason's eyes widened. There was nothing he could do as his father rose off the ground, gaining altitude. Leroy kicked gently backwards, clipping Mason's dreadlocks as the boy passed underneath him. The soft blow was enough to send Mason off balance, tumbling to the ground as he landed. Leroy touched down, glancing at his son.
"See," he said, helping mason back to his feet. "If you rush, you don't have time to think."
Mason nodded.
"I understand, Dad."
Leroy smiled.
"Good boy. Now, what do you say we head home and get some dinner?"
Mason smiled, watching as his father shrunk back down to his normal height, and the giant echidna gently picked him up.
"Dinner sounds great, Dad."
As they headed home, mason knew that with his father's guidance and training, he would become the best fighter in all the lands...
