SkekLyzul the Mother Skeksis Female Contest Entry
Finally presenting her! I was very excited to see that Jim Henson Co was holding a creature contest on the coat tails of their author's contest, I have always loved the Dark Crystal and couldn't wait to make my very own Skeksis. Well, watching the movie twice in a week, squinting at the art book being slowly flipped on youtube, 45 hours of crafting, many notes to people of invaluable insight, and somewhere around 500 hand sewn beads later, here she is! The only female Skeksis! I hope you enjoy the lore I wrote for her, it took a long time to hone it and way too much research lol.
"skekLyzul The Mother was the only female skeksis created when the crystal broke. urSil the priestess was her urRu counterpart. At the beginning of this time of transition the skeksis weren't as terrible and corrupt, a great deal of their good dealings with Gelflings was directly because of her efforts to befriend them. She employed many to work in the palace and she greatly enjoyed their company. She traveled to all the tribes with gifts and friendship and in return they presented her with gifts of their own. Her greatest treasure was the staff of Whisperwood, which a friendly Lyserflue guards and lights the paths ahead. Lyster, as skekLyzul named her was bound to the tree the staff was fashioned from after being struck by lightening and the Gelflings salvaged what life they could of it into the staff. skekLyzul like all of her kind have a dark side. Hers was mostly harmless to others - she was extremely vain and never went anywhere without her beak polished and gold coated, rings adorned all of her fingers and toes and her prized treasures were chunks of crystal that glowed with power, from the same caverns as the Dark Crystal itself. With the staff and crystals combined she would evoke a wind to help her glide over the land on her meager vestigial wings. Yes, like Gelflings and many other species of the world her second arms were more pronounced into a useful appendage than her male counterparts who were quite envious of them. skekSo knew that as emporer she was his mate by rite, but that didn't stop others from making advances. skekLyzul wanted none of it but stayed by his side to sway his rulings and to keep the Gelflings and other creatures they considered inferior safe and well cared for.
When she discovered skekTek doing experiments on a sick and dying Gelfling hand maiden of hers she flew into a fiery rage and attacked him. She swung the staff high and as Lyster scrambled out of the way the jagged top blinded his eye that he would later make into a telescopic lens. In his rage and pain he shoved her over the edge of his laboratory into the the molten heart of the earth. skekSo was so infuriated by her death that he ripped off his arm. Only his vast knowledge saved his life; and only in perfecting the life essence that they later began to need did her truly regain respect. Lyster returned to the Gelflings and told them what had happened, and from that day on they feared and hated the Skekis and became unwilling to serve them. The rest my friends, is history. skekLyzul lived on in the hearts of the Gelflings for many years, becoming woven in to their songs and stories but as the race died out so did her memory. The other Skeksis found their new more violent path too rewarding to mourn her for long, though it is rumored that skekEkt raided her closets soon after her demise."

Very nicely done! Looks great and the "Man hours" taken REALLY show!
Then accompanied with this great Lore....truly magnificent!
I personally was never much of a fan of the "Dark Crystal" movie......Probably too old at the time.
I think that came out in the mid to late 80's? Around my late teen years...I had seen it,and I had a friend who was really into it.
Still, this is truly a Great work and deserves Great appreciation!
Not many people can pull of the Incredible 3D work that you do Evie!

Still you really did do this Justice and rekindeled just how much I had forgotten about the 80's!
Great job Evie,Keep up the Increadable Art my friend!!

There were a number of truly amazing entries. Some of the ones picked though.... well. I won't say they weren't good, but they were a lot "simpler". They didn't post the written description part of the entries so perhaps some were more eloquent writers... many were better photographers... maybe they didn't like the big peacock feather I slapped on her head. I really don't know, but after all that work i have to assume some of my issue was the presentation. =(
Or sided judging......
I really don't think presentation would have been your down fall.
I just did a contest on DA and lost....loseing does not bother me,in fact I fully expect it.
What got my attenton though was that there were others who drew FAR better than I and even better still than the people who did win!! Personaly I think my own work looked far better than those who won....but was no compatiton for the other ther three who lost with me.
Sided judgeing is all I can think of.....
