Apathy is something we develop in a prolonged negative situation; it chokes like bile, clogs the mind and voice, makes us do and say things we wouldn't normally. My current situation has seen me becoming very internalised and apathetic, very few able to get a proper response out of me during the day and then all the feelings flooding in at night.
I've always had the idea of piking up gunk as a symbolism of getting negative emotion out ~
