No I did not make this, but it is one of my favorite bento sushi combos from a local Japanese market.
Just sooo many things!
Oden style half egg
Tofu and vegetable Salisbury steak/ hamubuga-
Two makizushi: kamaboko kani, cucumber, tamagoyaki with mayo
In the paper cup is sweetened boiled burdock and carrots with sesame seeds
Above that is oden styled baby bamboo/ takenoko
Then three small makizushi: pickled daikon, cucumber, and pickled eggplant
In the yellow paper cup is komatsu ( sorry I don't know the English term, but the green stuff) with carrots, and chopped up fried tofu skins
Above that is the oden styled carrots
Then two types of inarzushi: normal and chrazushi( small pink pickled sweetened fish eggs, and very thinly sliced egg omelet)
And lastly is kamaboko with a piece of konyaku ( devils tongue) dip in sweet soy sauce placed on to.

^_^ time consuming, but very delicious. :P I just wish they lasted as long as the preservative filled ones in the stores. But yeah, i spent several months in Japan as a child...Military Father. And i remember shopping for food looks very different from shopping in the states. Almost everything in Japan is imported, so things were so much more expensive.
Japanese people would be shocked, upset and jealous, all at once, if they could see an American Wal-mart. I know theres a Costco in Japan but, >:/ not the same thing

That is awesome! Where were you at in Japan?
Yeah, one of my husband's favorite things to do when we come to America is visit Walmart lol!! He's Japanese. Ohh the culture shock for him just makes me giggle.
And those tortillas do take a lot of time, taste great! I usually freeze them afterwards so that helps. There is a costco about 2 hours away... It has some good cheese just so hard to get there

I was 6 but i still remember alot. Me and one of my older brothers lived with a family friend in Nagoya, and my other older brother and mom lived with my father on base at Camp Zama. I remember we talked about it before we left Germany, and my father assured my mom, that there were 4 bedroom accommodations on base. But when we got there, there was a mixup and they were all taken. So, we were separated for, roughly, 5 months max...i think closer to 7.
I still remember their daughter that crushed after me, and who called me "Fox Butt", because of my hair (long and ponied). They hated the attention she gave me. I remember crowded trains and getting popped in the back of the skull by adults and tripped by children on the playground. Luckily they had REAL beds, a very western-ish diet, and watched alot of tv; so it wasnt too hard to adjust....but the other children children were horrible. I still have this scar splitting my eyebrow in half. When asked how i got it, i make up some BS Macho story. But in reality, another boy tripped me and i landed face first on someones lunch box....thats right....my scar is from a Bento Box XD
Best part was...no school. It was the longest summer of my memory.
Germany, was hands down, the best time of my life, tho. And i mean Germany, not Japan...between 4 and 6 , my hair was still very blonde and my eyes were blue. So i was everything the Aryans had in mind. :P And Germany had an immigration problem, like America. And my mom is Panamanian/Chinese-mixed. You have no idea how disrespectful many Germans were to my mom. Because they thought she was my 'Filipino Nanny'. She had to prove she was my mother so many times, with freaking documentation XD.

Kids can be super cruel at times. Or just People in general. It seems like the attitude is worse around bases too in Japan . I worry about my son a lot, he is only 2, but got sandy blonde hair.
Sounds like that was one long summer! Sorry your experience wasn't a better one,but the fox butt nick name is sooooo cute!
Thanks for sharing the bento wound story. Dear lord that had to hurt! It kinda reminds me of a scar I have on my head... From tripping over a baby puppy I was walking and going head first into a fire hydrant. :)
I really hope to make it to Germany one of these days! It really sounds amazing. ( besides what your mom had to go through)

Anyways, its not til later that i realized that, Japan is rather Xenophobic. The USA will not let Japan have a standing army, even to this day. Foreigners do all the menial labor the Japanese are too proud to do, i.e labor, cleanup and construction. And that's been more true since the Tsunami and Hurricanes. And then there are the immigration practices, or rather, policing of. I have heard horror stories before, but what happened to my Cousins husband was worse than anything i ever heard. He was a cook and he was with a catering company that did international work. They needed to replace some workers, who had left japan, in the wake of the Tsunami. So he was on a temporary 6 month work visa, and he signed on for another 6 months; but was 13 hours late renewing his Work Visa.
He had submitted the forms but due to processing and the bureaucracy, he didn't have an updated work visa just yet. At about 4 in the morning, the JSDF kicks in his door, detains him with violent force, and they held him for 4 weeks without due process. He wasn't allowed to speak to a lawyer or our embassy, he was questioned and interrogated as a foreign spy, he was tortured, mistreated, fed maybe 3 times a week, the only water he could drink was from his toilet, and at one point, he swears they stripped him naked, then beat him when they saw his 'penis' wasn't as little as they were joking it was. Not only did they deport him with a lifetime ban from the country, they charged him 1,200.00 USD for everyday they detained him. But after 10 weeks of legal wrangling by his catering companies lawyers, the bill was dissolved. He tried to file a lawsuit, but everything they did was within their legal rights.
And there's an artist on this site, i wont say who, who had a Japanese fiancee'. She was born in Japan but didn't speak the language. So, she convinced him to visit Japan with her, and since he was black, he got a lot of cold shoulders. Not to mention, he didn't feel very welcome. But when some found out his Fiancee' couldn't speak Japanese, they would walk away, without so much as a word to her. Him, they treated like crap, it was HER that they ostracized.
Its a great country and i would LOVE to visit again someday...but not before i take a Rosetta Stone course and really psych myself up. :P I was just a 6 yr old child and i had alot of them taking their American Hatred out on me.

I still think being injured by a bento box flat out wins!
Oh my god your poor cousin's husband!! know how strict they can be when you have to renew your visa... Scares the heck out of me every time I have to do it. I lot of people get kicked out permanently for not renewing on time. I try to get my forms in a month or two in advance. Had one friend that was lucky he was married to a Japanese and had kids, otherwise I think they would have kicked him out.
But dear god, the interrogation!! Sadly I am not too surprised, from what I heard about the local cops doing to even other native Japanese for just getting a little drunken scrap... And when your a gaijin ( foreigner.).. Yeah gets a LOT worse, especially one without family or good connections.
And with the other artist, being Japanese and not knowing the language... Yeah that doesn't fly, at all. Especially if you are in bigger cities. Countryside tends to be a bit nicer.
Personally I have had a great experience so far. I came here without a scrap of Japanese and starting teaching English in the country side. Many time people bent over backwards to help me. Should mention I am a short, very pale gal with brown eyes and hair American with mainly, European descent.
The worst experience I had is when my car broke down, and asked if I could leave it in a dentists parking lot till I could get it picked up. They said ok, but when I went there the next day I had this old lady come out and chew the living hell out of me, saying I was interrupting business, and she is going to sue me and call the cops. At first she was demanding ~$200 for leaving my car overnight, I tried to explain to her with my broken Japanese... She lowered it to 80... Turned out she thought I was a terrorist trying to blow up her son's dentist office. Though she did have a reputation for being the crazy lady throughout that whole district...
